1784. Etching. 175mm by 110mm (platemark). Depicts a middle aged Townshend in 1784, a year after receiving his title. He is standing side on, with one hand resting on his sword and the other holding out his hat, depicting him in the middle of a speech in the Commons. Initialed 'JS' in the plate lower left corner. Published by James Bretherton. Portrait of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney PC (1733 - 1800). Townsend was a British politician who, as Home Secretary during the Pitt Government, was responsible for planning the convict settlement of Botany Bay, and appointed Arthur Phillip as Governor. When Phillip reached Botany Bay he found it unsuitable for settlement and rowed to Port Jackson where he found a cove with better water supply and access for larger ships. In honour of Townsend, Phillip named the area Sydney Cove on 22nd January 1788, and the settlement became known as Sydney Town. Wove paper. Remains of acid free hinges on the reverse. Small faint mark on left hand side.

Van Der Lijn was a member of the Council of Batavia who had sponsored the expeditions of Dutch navigator Abel Tasman. Van Der Lijn (1608-1679) was governor-general of Dutch East Indies from 1646 until 1650. During the years of Van Der Lijn's governorship, corruption within the company increased. The administrators in the Netherlands dismissed him on 7th October 1650, Carel Reyniersz was appointed as its successor. It was customary for a man of his standing to make his homecoming as a commander of the fleet.
