Overall good plus.. First Pickering edition of these popular 17th century English devotional works, featuring a detailed examination of the ways which lead to a charitable and pure Christian life. A visually appealing volume printed by Charles Whittingham at the Chiswick Press with engraved frontispiece, woodcut initial letters, and the use of an old face font which Whittingham introduced in 1843. 8vo. Engraved frontispiece, xvi, 424pp.

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1846. Fair only in nineteenth century brown half calf, with front board detached, leather dry and flaking, spine strip almost detached, rebound likely for Adams, the lettering on the spine reads "From Thackeray's Library", in a very good clamshell box with gilt-lettered spine. In a near-contemporary hand someone has neatly written in ink around Thackeray's stamp on the title page: "The crest and monogram of William Makepeace Thackeray. This having been one of his books.. William Makepeace Thackeray's copy with his blindstamped monogram to the title page. Later this was the property of Charles Francis Adams (junior or senior is unclear, being either the son or grandson of John Quincy Adams), with his bookplate on the front pastedown. 8vo. vii, 536pp.

Overall, very good in original yellow wrappers, the wrappers of part 1 rubbed, stained, and repaired, a few spines worn and/or repaired, most of the plates browned, some have ownership signatures of noted hymn writer John Reynall Wreford, though most parts appear unread. Held in good morocco boxes, of which the upper halves of cases are wanting the rear portion, an old auction lot sticker to one case (lot 186, Sotheby's, 1976), other light wear. Laid in is the invoice from Sotheby Parke-Bernet from 1976.. First edition in the original 24 parts as issued. First issue, with "actresses" for "ancestresses" on p. 207, No. 7, line 15 from the bottom, in part 12, chapters XLVII-XLVIII misnumbered XLVIII-XLIX, and including the explanatory slip in part 20. Parma: Bodoni, 1794. One of a very few Bodoni printings in English. Bodoni "set what was, in general, to be the standard book style of the world until the appearance of William Morris." Preece, Typography, Encyclopædia Britannica. William Morris "disliked Bodoni's types, [and Morris's followers] have stigmatized them as the acme of ugliness, that Bodoni has been responsible for all the bad printing produced since his types droves the Caslon letters from the stage of popular favor." Bound in period full calf, marbled boards, unrestored with boards detached but preserved in a custom chemise and slip case with some soiling, award label to pastedown, early ownership inscription to title contents with minor scattered soiling, otherwise clean and bright.

Edinburgh: Printed for J. Dick, 1814. Very good in modern quarter leather. Prior owner bookplate to pastedown, contemporary owner name on title page, edges uncut/torn but in a few places too much so but not affecting text.. Scarce Edinburgh printing of Thomson's perennial work. The engraved frontispiece and engraved title must have been created hastily as both Thomson's and Johnson's names are spelled incorrectly - "The seasons, by James Thompson [sic] With the Life of the Author by Dr. Samuel Johnston [sic]." 12mo. With fifty woodcuts by John Bewick, younger brother of Thomas Bewick, which are of course moralizing but also humorous, as to be relatable to the intended, youthful audience. Trusler states in the preface that Bewick's woodcuts "knew how to illustrate the follies and vices of man better than most men." 12mo. viii, 196pp. ESTC T93463. Opie B 328. Very good in contemporary half-leather over marbled boards, top edge gilt, a bit rubbed with some wear to upper joint, discrete nineteenth-century library stamp to pastedown.
