[Hartford, Conn.]: German American Alliance, 1915. An announcement for a fundraising bazaar held from Jan. 25 - Jan. 30, 1916 at the Park Casino, Elm Street in Hartford, the proceeds of which was to be donated to orphans and widows in Germany, Austria, and Hungary who were suffering privations due to the war. The German American Alliance was part of the federation of ethnic German organizations known as the Deutschamerikanischer National-Bund (National German-American Alliance), whose logo can be seen in the upper lefthand corner. The NGAA was founded in Philadelphia in 1901 to promote German culture and at its peak in 1916 had a membership of approximately 2.5 million. With the rise of anti-German sentiment following the U.S.'s entry into the war in 1917, the NGAA was criticized for war relief efforts such as this one, for advocating neutrality and for resisting anti-prohibition efforts. In 1918, Congress revoked their charter, which President Wilson signed into law, but the organization had already… Read More

Description:
Glasgow: The Strickland Press, 1945. First edition. Plain, saddle-stapled wrappers printed in black; 12 pp. The Duke of Bedford expounds on the futility of continuing the war (WWII) while expressing pro-German sentiments: "Just as the Germans, instead of being granted a share of the world's economic resources proportionate to their needs and numbers, are to be herded and confined within even narrower territorial limits than before, so the Japanese are to be compelled to live or starve within the too-restricted limits of their rocky islands." The Duke of Bedford, previously Lord Tavistock, was a noted ornithologist and naturalist who became an ardent supporter of Social Credit. His economic reformist tendencies informed his pacifism, which is the subject of this pamphlet. In 1939 he became a founding member of the British People's Party, a Social Credit-influenced, anti-war group, which included prominent ex-members of the British Union of Fascists. He went to great lengths to… Read More

Description:
[Findlay, Ohio]: [The Glessner Medicine Co.], 1910. An advertising circular for Dr. Drake's (opium-based) German Croup Remedy, an elixir first made by a newspaperman, Leonard Glessner, in his home in 1889. He initially obtained the recipe from a German physician, August Drake, and incorporated in 1905 as the Glessner Medicine Co. In 1903, Glessner won a landmark legal decision after a local man, also named Drake, began hawking his own cure all under the same name. Although the medicine was touted as safe and never to sicken, a Dr. J. A. Palmer wrote a letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1907 reporting a case "in which death was directly attributable to "Dr Drake's Germany Cough Remedy." It was also explicitly mentioned in a Dr. Kebler's report before Congress in 1909 on medicinal preparations that contained habit-forming drugs. In alarmist languague, the recto describes the frightening onset of croup and the medicine's miraculous and instantaneous cure while the verso… Read More
