Frontispiece illustration. Previous owner's name 'Mary Enderby' to title page and preliminary page. Near Good condition, with rubbed / worn spine which is cracking at the edges, bumped corners and foxing to the prelims.Written by poet and novelist Jane Taylor whose best known work is the words to the song 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star'. Display has been noted as being reminiscent of Maria Edgeworth's work and was so popular that it went through thirteen editions from its initial publication in 1814 until 1832.Mary Enderby was the wife of Samuel Enderby Jnr. (1756-1829), who was the son of Samuel Enderby (1720-1797), founder of the whaling and sealing firm of Samuel Enderby & Sons. During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, Enderby vessels made profitable voyages to both northern and southern waters. On her husband's death in 1829, the firm was inherited by their three sons, Charles, Henry and George.

Original Edward Lear drawing in pen with black and grey ink and grey wash, numbered '43' to upper left and titled in pen with black ink to the lower sheet "And one, an English Home, - gray twilight pour'd / On dewy pastures, dewy trees / Softer than sleep:- all things in order stored / A haunt of ancient peace. (The Palace of Art.) / Hampshire, England". The house is the only English scene chosen by Lear in 'The Palace of Art' series was Lord Northbrook's Stratton House. Undated (1871). Overall size 13" x 11" (Mount aperture Size 8" x 5 1/2"). Very Good condition. Framed and glazed. (Not removed from the frame). Pencil note from previous owner to the reverse stating provenance was the Tennyson Trust. As featured in Ruth Pitman's "Edward Lear's Tennyson" Pg 81-86.

Engraved portrait frontispiece, fold-out map and 9 further plates, some hand coloured (collated & present). The first edition (a further edition was printed later the same year). Attractively bound. The Rev Yate spent seven years in New Zealand before returning to NSW and being dismissed from the mission for misconduct. This work provides an account of the geography, flora and fauna, the social structure of the Maoris, and a history of the mission.

Good condition, with staple rust marks (staple now removed, leaving pages/covers unbound). Tiny area of loss to lower edge of front cover. No inscriptions. Encore Les Dames opened at the Prince of Wales Theatre on the 23rd September, 1936 running until the 23rd January 1937 after which the theatre closed for a complete rebuild.
