The compass of the printerÂ’s mark is changed to a peeing man with pen.Text edition of TacitusÂ’ works by the great humanist and philologist Justus Lipsius (1547 – 1606). The first edition appeared in 1574 with a dedication to emperor Maximilian II, after this edition many more were printed. The letter that Lipsius sent to Plantijn appeared for the first time in the edition of 1581.Only two works by the Roman historian Tacitus (ca. 55 – 117 AC) are more or less preserved: the ‘Annales,Â’ in which Tacitus describes the period from the death of Emperor August to the time of Nero (14 – 68 AC), and the ‘HistoriaeÂ’ concerning the period from Emperor Galba to Emperor Dominitianus (69 – 96 AC). Separate title pages with the address of the publisher and the date of ‘De historien der Romeynsche geschiedenissen’ (2E5), ‘Het leven van Iulius Agricola’ (3B4) and ‘Historische aanmerkingen ter verklaringe van vele duysterheden in Tacito’ (3D5). The whole book has a continuous pagination and signature. Ex Libris on flyleaf by Anselmi vanden Bogaerde. Very good copy.Reprint of the translation of Tacitus by Johannes Vennekool from 1616, but revised and with notes by a “zeker liefhebber der Historien.” This person is also the translator of Lipsius biography of Tacitus that you can find at the front of this work.ZKL0091

Van Aken II, p.235; CBMNL 3429 Van der Aa (dichters) III, p.221 Het stuk is opgedragen aan Rijklof Cornelis van Goens, die net als de auteur commissaris was van de Amsterdamse schouwburg. Adolf Tack, van wie geen geboorte- en sterfdata bekend zijn, vertaalde tussen 1800 en 1807 een viertal Franse blijspelen. Zijn taak als commissaris was de keuze van de stukken en de verdeling van de rollen. In het 'Nieuw biografiesch, anthologiesch en kritiesch woordenboek van Nederlandsche dichters' van Van der Aa wordt nog over hem vermeld dat hij de eigenaar was van een klein, zeer keurig bewerkt, kamertooneeltje. Daar wordt dit stuk overigens abusievelijk 'Het huwelijk van den Capiteyn' genoemd.
