Dear General,
I had already received an invitation to the Grand Review of the Western Armies at Chicago, when I received your letter of Dec 2.
I am however too unwell to go any where, and am now under the care of a physician who has put me under a certain course of treatment that I have to comply with.
I assure you that I would be most happy to witness your Reunion which I expect will be a very pleasant affair, and I should be much pleased to meet there, the officers of the army with whom I have been at different times associated. I would not be surprised if this were… Read More

Description:
"You understand that the Yiddish edition of the World arose from the need to reach those social strata that were not reached by the German World. It was absolutely necessary to create a periodical which would in a reliable and faithful manner report on Zionist events and the Zionist requirements."

Though his newspaper Die Welt linked together supporters across three continents. Herzl recognized that, for his vision of a Jewish homeland to become a reality, Western and Eastern Jews would need to join forces, as would the literati and the Yiddish-speaking man-in-the-street. This letter supports Di Velt, the short-lived Yiddish edition launched in 1900, one of Herzl's attempts to bridge class, cultural and linguistic gaps. THEODOR HERZL.
Typed Letter Signed, on the need to support the Yiddish version of the Zionist Paper Die Welt. One page, in German, to his "colleagues" of the Zionist movement. Countersigned by Oskar Marmorek, the secretary of the Actions Committee. March 3, 1901, Vienna.… Read More

Description:
RACISM. [THEODORE ROOSEVELT].
Drawing. 1p, 5 x 6¼ in. Transcript

"To hear how Roosevelt is carrying on? I would like to give him a swift kick & see him full of holes, I wish the nation would make Alice marry Booker T Washington, don't you?"

[Followed by drawing of Alice Roosevelt marrying Booker T. Washington].

Historical Background

In 1901, Roosevelt invited Washington to dine with him at the White House, making him the first black man ever to do so. Whoever wrote this racist note and drawing apparently did not approve of the gesture, suggesting that Roosevelt's eldest daughter Alice marry the Civil Rights pioneer.

Washington, 1861. No binding. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed, to Thomas Ewing, his father. Washington, May 22, 1861. Written in pencil. 6 pp., 4 7/8 x 7 3/4 in. ""Genl Scott is in bad humor with the administration for appointing Reeder Brig Genl in regular army ... We have the idea he will not favor Cump's appt, except as Colonel...""Ewing informs his father of political machinations in Washington and early Civil War plans and appointments. He painstakingly weighs the chances of his foster brother (and brother-in-law), William T. ""Cump"" Sherman, obtaining a general's commission. He also offers a sober analysis of the relative strengths of the Union and Confederate armies in the Eastern theater. ""The general impression is the first battle, after Pickens, will be at Norfolk. The Govt. is not ready. Genl Scott says Genl Impatience is the only opposing General he fears. At present, it is plain the enemy can put man for man in the field anywhere in eastern Virginia with us."" Complete… Read More

Description:
In 1785, the state of Massachusetts instituted a stamp tax on newspapers but soon replaced it with a tax on newspaper advertisements. To protest the tax on advertisements, Thomas suspended his weekly newspaper, Thomas's Massachusetts Spy; or, the Worcester Gazette, at the end of March 1786. In April 1786, Thomas began publishing the Worcester Magazine, which was not subject to the tax, as a substitute for the Massachusetts Spy. Although a magazine in name, the Worcester Magazine
continued the same kind of news as Thomas had printed in his newspaper. Its most valuable features were political pieces and "intelligence," including essays for and against the new proposed U.S. Constitution. It also included a series entitled "The Worcester Speculator" (16 essays from September 1787 to March 1788), along with agricultural articles, medical notes, recipes, anecdotes, and other items.

Thomas continued publishing the Worcester Magazine for twenty-four months (approximately 104 issues) until… Read More

In a letter peppered with references to Middle Earth and its inhabitants, an exhausted Tolkien takes his first lengthy holiday in four years-in Italy. He returns and writes to Naomi Mitchison, a fellow novelist and his proofreader, for failing to provide feedback for her novel, To the Chapel Perilous. Tolkien discusses the demands on his time, ranging from his teaching load, thesis advising, and publishing, to reading critical reviews. Tolkien's dissatisfaction with radio adaptations of Lord of the Rings occupies a prominent place: I think poorly of the broadcast adaptations. Pamphlet Inscribed and Signed. 1960 Democratic National Convention program, Los Angeles, signed in 1964. "To Robert William Bean Kindest regards 1/22/64 Harry Truman / It's a great platform!" 3¾ x 8½ in.
Excerpts:

In 1796, in America's first contested national election, our Party, under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson, campaigned on the principles of "The Rights of Man." Ever since, these four words have underscored our identity with the plain people of America and the world. In periods of national crisis, we Democrats have returned to these words for renewed strength. ...

Broadside. State of the Union Message. National Intelligencer—Extra, June 1, 1841. Washington, DC: Gales and Seaton. 1 p., 18 x 23 in.William Henry Harrison took office in 1841 while the nation was still suffering from a depression sparked by the Panic of 1837, causing many banks to fail and unemployment to reach then-record levels. Though Harrison took ill almost immediately after giving his lengthy March 4 inaugural address, on March 17 he summoned Congress into a special session that would convene on May 31, 1841. On April 4, Harrison became the first President to die in office. John Tyler delivered his own inaugural address on April 9, but opponents in Congress, including John Quincy Adams, refused to accept Tyler's claim to be president and considered him instead the "acting president," arguing that he had to follow Harrison's policies.
