Description:
COLERIDGE'S PROPOSAL FOR NATIONAL EDUCATION A polemic on the political divisions in English society, which put forth an important proposal for national education. Coleridge explored the necessary conditions for social stability – what he termed Permanence, as distinct from Progress, in a polity – stressing the importance of a shared public sense of community, and national education. It also contains his thoughts on the use of The Bible as a guide for political administration. Written as a reaction to the post-Waterloo depression in England, The Manual and was not particularly well received. It is, however, a useful tract for studying Coleridge's political and religious thoughts. Coleridge was a profound political thinker. He began his life as a political radical, and an enthusiast for the French Revolution; but over the years he developed a more conservative view of society, somewhat in the manner of Burke. He had a major influence on Ralph Waldo Emerson and on American Transcendentalism. Small…

Description:
Soft cover. Near Fine. 8vo. Original printed wrappers, 26pp, with sewn seam. C. Sherman and Sons, printers, Philadelphia 1862. First Edition. Charles Ingersoll, an advocate of the Union in the Civil War, had written a public letter to a Southern friend, urging settlement of differences by giving in to Southern demands. Thayer effectively rebuts Ingersolls argument. He advises the North not to compromise in some unmentioned manner and upon some impossible terms (for you do not venture to hint at them), with bands of armed insurgents, who have plundered the public property. . . Men who have set up a mock government, which they make the agent of the despotism. He mentions the Missouri Compromise, the Lincoln elections, and as he puts it, the mock President of the Confederacy. He cites the struggles of 1776 and the Norths rise to end the secession by force of arms and to end slavery once and for all. Wrappers chipped and incomplete, interior clean. Fine. Rare.

Description:
4to. Modern half-calf over marbled boards, red leather label on spine. London: Printed for W. Nicoll and C. Etherington, 1767. First Edition. With a list of subscribers and a fold-out chart measuring rainfall in England for 1755-66. A fascinating set of contemporary statistics and observations on population patterns, cultural movements, food supply and meteorology in England for three hundred years – well within the life of Shakespeare. Therefore, it gives some implications for society in the time of Shakespeare. It is thought that Malthus may have used some of Short's methodologies; also it is known that Benjamin Franklin read the book. With the bookplate and perforated stamps of the John Crerar Library; minor bowing of the boards; light foxing on initial and final leaves; o/w a Fine Copy.

20. (CIVIL WAR). Townsend, John. The South Alone, Should Govern the South. And African Slavery Should be Controlled by Those Only, Who are Friendly to It. (Tract, No. 1). 8vo. original printed wrappers, stitched. 60 pages. (Charleston, S.C., 1860). First Edition. Three other editions were printed in this watershed year. Howes T317aa. LCP 10366. Sabin 96379. Work 316 (recording the third edition]. III Turnbull 328 (third and fourth editions). Townsend states that the choice for Carolinians is "manly RESISTANCE" vs. "SUBMISSION." Because Lincoln, Seward, and other "Black Republicans" intend the total abolition of slavery, he argues: "Is it the policy of the south to wait for that to take place, or to anticipate it by putting herself beyond the influence of their policy or the operations of their laws? . . . 'By taking their destinies under their own control, and preparing, without delay, to organize for themselves a separate and independent confederacy.'" Secession must follow the defeat of the Southern…

Hardcover. Fine. 8vo. Bound in contemporary limp vellum with the title in 16th century manuscript upon the spine. Ex Officina Henrici Stephani Parisiensis typographi (Henri Estienne), AN. M. D. VII (1557). First Edition. (Schreiber 141, Renouard 116 and Adams 939). These lectures were eloquent exhortations to virtue, filled with quotations chiefly from Plato and Homer, their philosophical content deriving from Platonism and Cynicism. At the end are appended 19 pages of critical notes by Henri Estienne. (Schreiber). Maximus Tyrius (Maximus of Tyre) was a Greek rhetorician and philosopher who flourished in the time of the Antonines and Commodus, 2nd century A.D. After the manner of the sophists of his age, he travelled extensively, delivering lectures on the way. His writings contain many allusions to the history of Greece, while there is little reference to Rome; hence it is inferred that he lived longer in Greece, perhaps as a professor at Athens. Although nominally a Platonist, he is really an…
