First edition thus; very large thick octavo; two volumes bound in one; xxxvi, 628, viii, 602pp. In full contemporary vellum over bevelled wooden boards (lightly worn, boards slightly bowed with stain towards bottom of front board), gilt lettered green morocco title label to head of spine, all page edges stained red, contemporary marbled endpapers,early ink ownership name to front blank, occasional pencil annotations, light dampstain through most of volume but otherwise clean. Sound, usable copy of this comprehensively annotated edition of the works of Tacitus, a well bound substantial volume with plenty of shelf appeal.

Attractive example of this early edition.

FIRST EDITION; octavo, two volumes complete, viii+380+viii+376pp. In attractive Victorian black half leather over purple cloth boards, five raised spine bands, red and green gilt-lettered leather title labels in second and fourth compartments, other compartments richly gilt, binding with only the lightest of wear and very light fading to cloth boards. With marbled page edges and matching original marbled endpapers. Occasional unobtrusive light stains and browning (especially to outer margins of plates well clear of printed images) but overall a clean copy free from foxing and with full complement of 46 engraved plates (including engraved frontispiece to each volume) and numerous in-text illustrations. Bound up from original parts with small stab holes to inner margins. A very attractive set in first edition.

Small 12mo (5 x 3 x 1 inches); 3 vols complete in one physical volume; xii, 168, 107, 121, [3]pp. Each volume preceded by engraved frontispiece. In late eighteenth century full calf, gilt rolls dividing spine into five compartments, gilt lettered red and green leather spine labels in second and third compartments, other compartments gilt, board edges gilt, short closed tear to vol.3 p.105 with no loss of text. A superb example of this rare pocket edition: not in ESTC (which lists the very scarce 1780 edition only with just 3 x Uk and no US citations).
