Description:
Prague: Petr a Tvdrý, 1922 Octavo 20x13.5 cm., original wrappers, 85pp. with four foldouts. Second edition. Linocut cover & page design by Josef Capek. This second Czech edition of Macak's translation was a highly inventive response to Marinetti’s visit to Prague in December 1921 and can be seen as the most creative exercise in Futurist books published in Czech. Capek’s graphic work on this went beyond mere replication of the original graphics, employing the alphabetical symbols and phonetics unique to the Czech language. The publication had a major impact in the Czech publishing world and led to further developments in typography and book design. It is probably also one Josef Capek’s most radical design statements in his long career of bookmaking, especially in the foldouts. Primus No. 6. Worldcat finds 8 North American institutional holdings.

Description:
Moscow: Mossoveta, 1933 Quarto, wrappers. Stroitel'stvo Moskvy (1924-1941) is a significant document of soviet architecture and design for the era. Issues through the mid-1930s employ bold typographic experiments and page design. It also became a forum for urban planning, mass housing and monumental construction, in theory and practice between leading architects, engineers and thinkers (e.g., Moisei Ginzburg, Anatoly Lunacharsky). Eventually Soviet orthodoxy and Neoclassicism prevailed and experimental graphics disappeared. T. Kvesin is the editor for this number. Palace of the Soviets, later submissions; projects by Shchuko, Iofan, articles by Lunacharsky, photomontage cover by Elkin. This copy very good + with spine wear.

Pisek: Edice Prusvit, 1934 Octavo 21x17 cm., decorated cloth, 42 (3)pp. A fine bibliophile work of the regional Czech avant-garde, with cover and page design by Jiri Skorpil. The Czech National Library, the only institution holding this work, attributes the publication to Miloslav Nodl in Zatec, however our description takes the information as stated in the book and colophon. Description:
Prague: Odeon, 1928 Octavo, wrappers, 91(iv) pp. 7 plates, with photo-collage cover by Teige. Six b/w illustrations by Grosz, Léger, others and seven photographic plates, book design by Teige. This forms Part I of the series O humoru clownech a dadaistech. It is comprised of essays composed from 1924 to 1926. Both this and its sequel, along with other work written by Teige at the time, examines the function of laughter and absurdity and its unique function in human life. It also was Teige's critical appraisal of dada --- he would praise it for clearing the ground of the old, but reject it as a part of the past, whereas constructivism was the path of the new; he would incorporate the humor and absurdity in his constructivism nonetheless, as a counterweight to the rational bias. This is a classic devetsil work. Despite its renown, only one copy of this first edition found in North America libraries. 800

Description:
Prague: Olymp, sv. 7-8, 1927 Quarto 24 x 16cm., wrappers, 192pp., 28 plates. Cover and book design by Teige. A collection of Teige s ideas on Poetism, which rejected any sense of elitism in the arts, especially poetry, which he viewed as the distanciation from a living art. Poetism calls for the industrial arts to integrate with the fine arts and integrate in everyday experience and usage. This is couched in the context of a revolutionary ideology and leans towards constructivist idealism. It is one the author s most original contributions to 20th century esthetics. Stavba a básen' is a high point of the devetsil movement and is the author s confession of a vision that he would strive towards continuously. Illustrated with examples of the international avant-garde of the day, including le Corbusier, Lissitzky, Picasso and many others, as well as the leading exponents in Czechoslovakia, Styrský and Toyen. This copy inscribed by Teige to F. Gökari, 1927.

Prague: Vaclav Petr, 1932 Quarto, ½-cloth, 208pp. Czech text, with captions and summaries in Russian and German. Cover and book design by Teige. Volume 2 of the Editions of Contemporary International Architecture edited under Teige. The first major appraisal of the architect Jaromír Krejcar (1895-1950), Czech Functionalist architect and one of its chief exponents. Krejcar was a close friend of Teige’s, and participated in the Devětsil movement from early on with him. This is a major monograph of his work to date, including built and unbuilt projects, and includes his work in urban planning, interior and industrial design as well as some commercial graphic work, with every page bursting in images, photos, drawings. Teige is here the theorist, now completely dedicated to architecture as his main outlet as writer and editor, and in a number of ways his evolution to this point paralleled or was in synch with Krejcar’s own, especially as it served here to show the link of… Read More

Description:
Quarto 26.5x18.5 cm., wrappers, 28pp., with insert. 5000 copies; includes corrigenda slip. Designed by the October group members Telingater, Gutnov, and Spirov. October was a Constructivist artist collective organized through the efforts of Aleksandr Rodchenko, Aleksei Gan, El Lissitzky. The elite of Soviet modernism, including Dmitri Moor, Sergei Eisenstein, Boris Ignatovich, the brothers Vesnin, Gustav Klutsis, came together under an aegis of excellence in the visual arts and design. The group was inaugurated in 1928. Rodchenko displayed many of his classic photos in an exhibition in 1931.This manifesto followed, in which the collective called for the consolidation of the proletarian art forces and announced a campaign in aggressive language. Solomon Telingater supported this with a highly dynamic visual design throughout. Authoritarian pressure led to expelling Rodchenko with charges of formalism later that year, and the pressures from above increased steadily to disband the group in 1932. Two… Read More

Budapest: Taltos-kiadasa, 1916 Quarto 26.3 x 21.4 cm, wrappers, xvii, 105 plates, cover and book design by author. Ede Toroczkai-Wigand (Hungarian, 1869-1945) was an architect, builder and author of a number of books on architecture and the design traditions of Transylvania. He designed and built a number of projects in a Hungarian secessionist, arts-&-crafts style which has been termed National Romanticism, a style found chiefly in Transylvania. His books, such as the present one, celebrate this style with drawings, photos and paintings of his projects, with settings in the landscape and interior work.
