2 works in 1 volume, 4to. 1). 24 leaves. 463 pages. 2). 12 leaves. Full vellum with overlapping fore-edges, flat spine with inked title (18th century binding). 1). Very rare edition, printed in Leuven, of the Greek paraphrase of the Institutes of Justinian, by one of its original editors. Theoophilus was a Byzantine jurisconsult who lived in the 6th century AD and taught jurisprudence in Constantinople. Regarded as the best commentary on the Insititutes and including valuable information on the peculiarities of ancient Roman law, this Greek paraphrase of the Latin original was first published in Basel in 1534 by the Dutch jurisconsult Van Zuichem (1507-1577). This edition is due to the Dutch humanist and printer Rutgerus Rescius (d. 1557); a friend of Erasmus and a distinguished Hellenist, he was Vesale's Greek teacher and first publisher. First Edition published in France, gathering "l'Histoire des Plantes" and "Traité sur les Causes des Plantes" by Greek philosopher and naturalist Theophrastus, disciple of Aristotle's and his successor at the head of the Lyceum of Athens. These two works translated from Greek by humanist Theodorus Gaza make up his whole work as a botanist. Theophrastus was the first to study plants regardless of animals, giving thus a specific purpose to botany. He admitted the importance of observation and tried, for the first time, to methodically classify plants. He is also the first person who tried to classify the diseases affecting plants.
