Square octavo album, 180 x 155 mm, blind embossed green cloth boards lettered in gilt ""Scrap Album""; front hinge split; recto of first leaf with pen and ink sketch bearing the owner-artist's initials ""R.T."" on an artist's palette; containing [20] pen and ink sketches and one watercolour on the rectos of the leaves, with a few additional sketches executed on the versos; many of the sketches are accompanied by the artist's manuscript captions beneath; some very mild scattered foxing and occasional toning, but essentially the works are in good condition throughout. A charming album of amusing and quirky sketches, the most effective and original of which tend to be simple compositions with imaginary subject matter. Quarto, publisher's cloth covered boards in original dust jacket, publisher's card slipcase, pp 272, introduction by Laurie Thomas, 75 colour and b/w plates, plus catalogue of 1,875 original Boyd drawings illustrated in b/w; a very good copy. The catalogue, in particular, has resulted in this book being the standard reference for Boyd drawings.

[France : probably between 1970 and 1980]. A unique object created by Yvon Taillandier by overpainting the pages of a nineteenth century copy of the published score to the opera Lara by Louis-Aimé Maillart (1817-71), the volume measuring 275 x 200 mm, with 295 pages. Taillandier has painted 7 full-page and 34 double-page paintings within the first 81 pages of the musical score, some leaves painted recto only but most painted both recto and verso, to create a suite of works highly representative of the artist's distinctive absurdist style. The exterior of the book is rubbed and the spine perished, the book is signed by Taillandier in pen in the first image. Taillandier's imaginary landscapes are populated by fantastic figures: multi-limbed, contorting, sphinx-like hybrids, by turns menacing and self-devouring, playful and humorous, or sexual and fetishistic. [Japan] : M. Takamatsu, [c.1910]. Quarto, 250 x 190 mm, bound in Japanese folding accordion style, in the original wooden boards (textile coverings perished), wet stamp of the merchant 'M. Takamatsu' to front and rear pastedowns, comprising [38] leaves of thick card with 152 sepia printing-out paper photographs of Chinese export furniture, probably destined for the American market, including ornately carved wooden cabinets, bureaus, tables, chairs, beds, dressers etc.; the photographs are mounted in pairs recto and verso of each leaf, accompanied by printed labels (in English!) completed in manuscript giving product numbers and dimensions and with provision for price in Yen (this is left blank on each label); mild scattered foxing to the leaves (mostly confined to the edges of the paper labels); the photographs are in uniformly good condition throughout. Dating from the 1950s, the artist’s early years in New York, the drawings took as their inspiration magazine photographs and illustrations—many from LIFE magazine—and provide further insight into Warhol’s unique working method. Octavo, original flushcut limp cloth (somewhat sunned) with printed title label to front (loss to top left corner of label), front pastedown with bookplate of John Calaby, frontispiece tipped-in albumen print photograph with montage of head-and-shoulder portraits of identified Narrinyeri (Ngarrindjeri) men and women by Townsend Duryea, pp. iv, [ii], 107; a very good copy. The frontispiece portraits of Aboriginal residents of Point Macleay Mission include one of James Unaipon, deacon at the Church of Point Macleay and father of David Unaipon.

Octavo, original printed wrappers (tiny top corner piece missing throughout), staple bound, old library stamp to inner front cover, inner hinge of the outer leaves neatly reinforced, 24 pp, internally very clean, a good copy. This grammar of the language of the Ngarrindjeri people of the region around Lakes Alexandrina, Albert and Coorong was first separately issued in 1878; it was then reprinted in 1879 as an addendum to Taplin's Folklore, Manners, Customs; and following Taplin's death, it was printed again in 1880 with different title page (referring to the author as 'the late Rev. G. Taplin') and printing details (Spiller, rather than Cox).

Octavo, lettered wrappers with pictorial inlay (edges chipped, rubbed, image flecked, staples rusted); pp. 58, photographic portrait of the author, 12 colour plates; occasional light foxing, a good copy. A rare and detailed early monograph on the indefatigable Ellis Rowan, the intrepid and well-travelled artist who produced a large body of vibrant natural history watercolours noted for their artistic skill and scientific accuracy. This early work by Swiss writer Henry Alexis Tardent (1853-1929) includes twelve colour plates of Rowan's paintings, with descriptions by C.T. White, Queensland Government Botanist. Tardent emigrated to Queensland in 1887 and was a founding member of Les Causeries Francaises (Alliance Francaise). This copy inscribed on the title page 'To my greatly esteemed friend Mr. R. Cooper with the author's compliments, best wishes and gratitude. [? ] Wynnum 29-4-27. Henry A. Tardent'.

Broadside, folio sheet 430 x 280 mm, with 'Second edition' printed above the title at upper right; verso addressed in manuscript to The Right Honorable Viscount Palmerston, MP, Secretary, Home Department, London with the date of 3 November, and with two contemporary postal markings which record that it was sent from Birmingham on 3 November 1853 and received in London the next day (1d red postage stamp is loose); numerous old horizontal and vertical folds and some minor chipping to edges, the ink from the address and the circular postmarks showing through the fine paper but not seriously obscuring any of the printed text. An apparently unrecorded broadside polemic by one Edward Taunton, self-described as 'an Old Foreign Merchant of 1807'. Manuscript in black, brown and red ink on paper, approx. 45 x 45 mm, cut in octagonal shape and mounted on plain card, 120 x 90 mm; border ruled in green and red ink; with a caption title in manuscript on the mount, also bordered in coloured inks; very well preserved, with some toning and light marks at the margins; verso with residual paper adhesions from an old album mount. During 1896 Dr. W. G. Tayler, a medical practitioner, placed many notices in the Australian Town and Country Journal advertising his private ""lying-in home"" for ladies visiting Sydney at his residence ""Etrenne"", 2 Queen Street, Woollahra. This was essentially a maternity home that provided support for pregnant women and girls who were nearing the birth of their child, and for new mothers. Perhaps it was to one such visitor that he presented this novel and rather astonishing piece of penmanship.
