Description:
Lebanon, PA: Joseph Hartman, 1819. First American edition. Thick 8vo. Two parts in one volume, both with separate title-pages: [8], 458, [2], 426, [2] pp. Text foxed as is true in all copies, but COMPLETE and UNMARKED. Binding: original Pennsylvania binding by a workshop that was closely associated with Joseph Hartman: reverse beveled wooden boards covered with acid-treated sheep; the leather on the covers of the binding mottled whereas the turn-ins are striated; sprinkled edges, two original catches and clasps (catches on upper cover). Minor wear to binding extremities but an excellent copy. This binding is apparently AS ISSUED by the printer / publisher Joseph Hartman as is attested by the Library Company copy of this edition that is identically bound, but which -- unlike our copy -- is very worn (as is a copy known to us that is currently in a private collection USA). Affixed to the inside front cover of our binding is the booklabel of "Maria Fisher, No. 133," presumably indicating that there…

Description:
Los Angeles: DeVorss & Co, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Small 8vo. [6], 13-43 pp. Limitation not stated but this copy is numbered "948." Original dark maroon pebbled cloth. Loosely inserted promotional leaf for "The Trowel" and Chela's "The Way to Civilization." Forgotten Freemasonry for Women. The author of this curious work, writing pseudonomymously as "The Chela," was the Director and head of the now-unknown Order of Ancient Active Masons; it is very possible that she was the sole member. From the introduction: "This little book contains the first seven of the thirty-three degrees of Ancient Active Masonry. It is the foundation of "The Order," and is now presented to become the foundation of World Peace and real Brotherhood." It would appear that the Order of Ancient Active Masonry was an unacknowledged Masonic Order that allowed women to join. By 1942 The Chela was giving lectures "by request" at the Masonic Hall in Coronado (see: Coronado Eagle and Journal, no. 21, p. 4, May 28,…

Description:
Paris: F.-A. Didot & G. Debure, 1782. Very good. 12mo. Contemporary Parisian crimson morocco by Derome le Jeune, triple gilt fillets around sides, small stars in the corners, flat spine with gilt ruled into six compartments, the second lettered direct, small stars in the others, board edges and turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk marker. A diminutive binding of austere elegance by Nicolas-Denis Derome "le Jeune" (signed with his ticket dated 1785, classified by Ract-Madoux as K3), the foremost bookbinder of his era. The design reflects the growing movement in the decorative arts towards the restrained, almost severe Neoclassical models of Greek and Roman antiquity, a reaction against the excesses of the Rococo style. The most successful Neoclassical Derome bindings are distinguished by their high quality leather and technically perfect execution -- as here. In the (mis)attribution of eighteenth-century French bindings to N.-D. Derome le Jeune there will be no end, and even…

Paris: Jacob (Jacques) Bogard, 1549. 8vo (175 x 67 mm). [8], 112 ff., ruled in red. Collation: *8 A-O8, COMPLETE. Contemporary Paris binding by the Cupid's Bow Binder: smooth polished calf, gold-tooled (rebacked with new spine, corners and extremities refurbished, modern pastedowns and endpapers), a.e.g. Contemporary French Renaissance binding by the "Cupid's Bow Binder" who was active from 1545-1556 and was responsible for some of the finest bindings of that age. Among his great patrons were Jean Grolier, Catherine de' Medici, Anne de Montmorency (Constable of France), Louis de Sainte-Maure, Marc Lauryn, and the King of France. It is curious that the name of the Cupid's Bow Binder has so far eluded researchers, especially considering that no less than 46 bindings by him for Jean Grolier survive according to Anthony Hobson. Following that of Gommar Estienne (reliure du roi) he was the most important binder to the King (see Lafitte and Le Bars). Our binding, while comparatively modest, is…

Description:
New York: S. & D.A. Forbes, Printers, 1830. Good. 12mo. 192 pp. + [4] full-page woodcuts. Original publishers glazed boards (soiled but perfectly square and sound), edges sprinkled red (intermittent foxing throughout, most prominently opposite the rectos and versos of the engraved plates and on pastedowns and endpapers, final blank leaf with clean horizontal tear). WITH WOODCUTS BY ALEXANDER ANDERSON (1775-1870), THE FATHER OF WOOD-ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATIONS IN AMERICA. The four Alexander Anderson woodcuts were engraved by [John] Roberts, who signed three of the four woodcuts. These woodcuts first appeared in 1802 (New York: Printed and sold by George F. Hopkins = Pomeroy no. 110a). It is unclear if Anderson was also responsible for the illustrations on our publisher's binding. The present edition seems to be scarce in commerce: our copy appears to be the only one currently on the market. Certainly it is in much better condition than the Widener copy (15467.25.12) which is even more foxed than ours,…

Description:
Wyoming. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Tall narrow photo album containing 52 color photographs (all 3.5" x 5") inserted into an assemblage of 60 sleeves (numbered 2-61), all with typed captions (and thus 8 photos are no longer present), ca. 50% of the photos are aerial views. Curious 1980 photo album showing landscapes and topography of the Wind River Indian Reservation and environs, many being aerial views. Well documented are the rivers that run through and around the Reservation (Wind River, Little Wind River, Pope Agie River), the flatlands (Bighorn Flat), lakes (Bull Lake and Dam, Ocean Lake), creeks (Willow, Owl and Crow Creeks), irrigation canals, mountains, empty reservoir behind Anchor Dam, Arapahoe Ranch, Fort Washakie, and more. These photographs were taken by David Keith Todd (1923-2006), a renowned hydrologist. The album's original intent seems to have been as a record of potential water resources and possible development on the reservation, but the results are striking,…

Madrid, 1790. Peter Marin. Small 4to. 224 pp. Bound in contemporary horsehide (?) -- on covers a flower tool has been impressed in gold to form a cross, in the outer edges a rope-work roll, at the corners the same flower tool, four raised bands on spine, in the compartments impressions in gold of the same flower tool; two pair of original catches and clasps affixed by nails (one indistinguishable replacement), all edges gilt, around edges of the textblock are 11 impressions of a 6-pointed star. Minor wear to binding, text clean and crisp. Preserved in a cloth box. FEASTS AND FESTIVALS in Toledo. It was suggested to us that this book was bound in Columbia, South America, where it had been (beautifully) preserved located since Colonial times. Be that as it may, the front and back pastedowns consist of printed Spanish Revenue Stamped paper: "Quarenta Maravedis / Sello Quarto, Quarenta Maravedis, Ano de Mil y Ochocientos Siete" (1806). Such documents would have been valid for one year only in Spain,…
