The Royal George stayed afloat for only 26 years yet had a long and extraordinary history from her launching in 1756 right up to the present day (the lions surrounding Nelson's column in London's Trafalgar Square were made from the salvaged metal of her guns). She played a leading part in Admiral Hawke's victory over the French at Quiberon Bay in 1769, played a minor role in the 1st Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1780 when Admiral Rodney defeated the Spanish fleet, and Anson, Rodney, Boscawen and Howe were among the great sailors who flew their flag in her.Illustrations by Karen Osborne. **** NOT EX LIB **** 3.
