This book is about the systematic or scientific study of bird migration - a chapter in the history of ornithology. The four individual ornithologists, pioneers of bird migration research, who feature prominently in it were active at the end of the nineteenth and the start of the twentieth century. They were Heinrich Gatke, Hans Christian Cornelius Mortensen, Johannes Thienemann and William Eagle Clarke. Gatke was the first serious observer of of bird migration; Mortensen invented ringing; Thienemann founded the first bird observatory; Clark initiated the study of visible migration at lighthouses. The work of these four pioneering individuals was shattered in 1944-45 by the Second World War, which left both Gatke's Helgoland and Thienmann's Rossiten in ruins.
