The book is in near perfect condition, but because the board has a small corner bump and some tinmy discoloration marks you may be able to see on the scans, I do not grade it FINE.

Half leather (red) with raised gilt spines title and publisher's intitials on spine. Matching leather corner protectors. Marbled page edges. Pink end papers. VERY minor edge rubs and front hinge showing mull . Very strong and tight. Book would grade very good if it were modern, but this is 213 years old and deserves a FINE. No writing. Second volume has more tanning than first: I do not know why, but it appears to a common phenomenon. The opening poem is the "Poetical, Supplicatng, Modest, and Affecting Epistle to those Lietrary Colossuses, the REVIEWERS. Satire was the strong characteristic of Pindar's. works. He was the most prolific and successful burlesque poet of the later eighteenth century. His particular targets were the Royal Academy and the royal familyincluding the king and John Payne (Rights of Man).

29-page book of verse in purple velvet-feel? card covers published 1931 and still brand new although some toning over the years. Presumably that is because of the paper that was used as this book has lain unopened for over eighty years since the day it was signed by the author. It cannot have been read as it has never been fully opened. Villon was a Parisian-born 15th century poet, one of the best-known of the 15th century

AND it has a dust-jacket. It is a brown edge-damaged DJ completely severed top to bottom. But a dustjacket in 1883?

This is a Tai Pei reproduction of the 1898 edition. Both volumes are about fine although one corner rubbed and both volumes with ownership stamp on fep. 836 + 776 pages. Vast number of illustrations all impeccable as are foldouts. In back pocket is an enormous fold-out map of the empire; map in impeccable new condition (includes Tibet as colonial part of empire.)

There is a large coloured fold-out map that is only GOOD with small tear IN THE BLANK MARGIN Large number of illustrations; every one checked and present in near-fine condition. Nine appendices. A terrific book. Front blue board with gilt illustration. Gilt titling etc on spine.. Corners bumped. No writing. Black front end paper stretches across inside board and page, as it should, and is cracked down centre but not open. That sound worse than it is. All it means is that the white shows along the crack.

Gilbert Henry Wintle was the author of a variety fof books from "Beekeeping" in 1899, History of South Africa 1900, Strange Parters and Gentleman Tramp around 1907-1909. He also wrote books on Ovid and Latin Texts. Apart from the Latin texts, few copies have survived. It was pubblished in Toronto, but only one Canadian Library (British Columbia) has a copy, and I bought mine in B.C. Odd! Is there a connection.
