Hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 13cm, 355pp. Signed by Ernest W Pettifer to the ffep, with a second gift inscription below. The author was the Clerk to the West Riding Justices at Doncaster, and a writer about the legal system and crime. In this book, he covers the work of the courts though cases, with chapters on the mind of the criminal, strange cases etc, and also the children's court, husbands and wives, gangs and gangsters, and so on, with occasional illustration. Condition: The book is in strong readable condition, with some spotted foxing to the page edges. The dustwrapper is a little tatty to the edges but in good order.

Hardback, bound in the original cloth with gilt titling to spine. 20 × 13.5cm, 272pp. Faces in the Fire is a collection of essays which provide an inspiring and thoughtful read. One 'fancy' is An Old Maid's Diary, set in 1973 where and old lady sitting by the fire at Christmas starts to dream about her husband / fiance on the Western Front who was killed. He visits in dreams and she wonders of the life they would have had together. Condition: A good reading copy. The book is in solid shape and perfectly readable but suffers from blotchy foxing to the title page and endpapers, and to a much lesser extent through the text.

Hardback, bound in the original green cloth with printed titling to spine and upper board. 25.5 × 17.5cm, 184pp. A delightful collection of stories and fables from Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania and other countries along the west coast of Africa, collected by American missionary William H Barker. Many stories feature the Spider-man Anansi, a clever but devious character who usually comes to a bad end. Most of the stories or fables have a clever moral, or tell how some aspect of the natural world came to be. The book has 24 illustrations (photographic frontispiece and 23 drawings). Condition: A good reading copy. The green cloth is mottled and rubbed to the spine ends. Light foxing to the prelims and a previous owner's name and date to ffep (the folklorist Francesca Claremont). The main body of text is in good readable condition. All plates are present as per the plate index, but one is neatly detached.

This is a rare first edition of W R Richardson's light-hearted and witty account of a trip taken from London Bridge to Lombardy in Italy by train and coach, describing how much easier it in in his day that his fore-fathers. He travels through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France, observing the locals, their customs and art etc. The book is illustrated with a map of the route, and smaller illustrations within the text by Sydney Prior Hall. Signed and titled by Carol Walklin in pencil below the image. A delightful linocut depicting a mother holding a new baby, one of a series the artist did on this theme. Carol Walklin (1930-2017), was an artist and graphic designer. She was a leading British printmaker and wrote a number of books on printmaking and design, having an influence on many of the current generation of printmakers. Condition; Both mount and image are in very good condition, with one or two small dents to the mount.

First published in 1933, this charming childrens' book by American artist Wanda Gag tells the story of Bunny, driven from Bunnyland to Elsewhere after an unfortunate accident with an apple. The book runs through the alphabet with rhymes and full page illustrations (F is for Frog, he's fat and funny / "Looks like rain" says he to Bunny; and K is for Kitten, catnip-crazy, L is for Lizard - look how lazy). Condition: The book itself is in good plus condition but with some bumping to the spine ends and corners and a child's scribble to the ffep. The dustwrapper is edgeworn with several small closed tears and rubbing to the spine ends.

She pioneered the first of the personal columns. She told us how it really was. She was funny - and smart. The Observer's star columnist for 40 years, she is also famous for Cooking in a Bedsitter. Much loved for her frankness and honesty, her autobiography is about family, studying at Roedean, work on Fleet Street and about her long marriage to the recently deceased crime writer Gavin Lyall. Paperback. 21.5 × 13.5cm, xix + 292pp. In his later years, William Morris became an active and respected lecturer and writer on social and cultural themes, the successor to Carlyle and Ruskin. He published two volumes of these writings in his lifetime, Hopes and Fears for Art in 1882, and Signs of Change in 1888. Since it was in 1883 that he committed himself to Socialism, these two volumes read together show clearly the development of his political-cultural thinking. All the lectures deal, in clear and vigorous English, with issues of work, ecology and society that are still of central concern today. Eight essays by Henry Wolff that had previously been published in journals such as The Gentleman's Magazine etc. They all have a historical flavour, with subjects such as Richard de la Pole, Voltaire, the Royal Family, and so on. Henry William Wolff (1840-1931) was a British co-operative activist and in 1895 was a founder of the International Co-operative Alliance, serving as its joint president until 1907. Condition: A good reading copy. The blue cloth boards are rubbed and bumped and the inner binding is a little strained in places but the book remains in good readable condition.

Timothy Richard (1845-1919) was a Welsh Baptist missionary to China who influenced the modernisation of China and the rise of the Chinese Republic. In 1869 the Baptist Missionary Society sent him to China where he laboured, with infrequent furloughs, from 1870 to 1915, first in Chafoo, then in Shantung and Shansi, and finally in Shanghai, when, in 1891, he was appointed secretary of the Christian Literature Society of China. The colours range from green to blue to brown. Condition: The binding is a little rubbed, there is a little weakening to the front hinge but the book remains in otherwise strong readable condition.

Henry Williamson's last book tells the story of a boy and a pigeon, the pigeon-racing world, and the poisoning of peregrine falcons who kill the pigeons to eat. This edition illustrated by Ken Lilly. Condition: Generally good condition, but the binding suffers a small amount of loss at the head and foot of the spine and light surface wear to the front joint. However, the pages are clean and the binding is secure. Williamson's signature is crisp.
