Description:
London: Routledge, 2001. Paperback. Very Good/No dust jacket issued.. Routledge, London 2001. Paperback. Book Condition: Very good. Very light creasing to spine and the book leans a little. Very sound and clean, free of marks and annotations. (368 pages). The essays in this collection, Identities, illuminate the ways in which conventions of realism were transformed by new ideas about gender and race, and an increasing moral uncertainty. Focusing on some of the most striking novels of the century, this volume explores some of the key emerging themes in nineteenth century fiction: madness and the unconscious, decadence and degeneration, the 'New Woman' and masculinity, colonialism. Concepts crucial to understanding the literature and society of the nineteenth century are clearly explained and discussed. This volume is an indespensible resource for the literature of this period. This text also formed part of the Open University course AA316 'The Nineteenth Century Novel'.
