Boynton, Henry Walcott (1869-1947) Annals of American Bookselling 1638-1850. 1932, 8vo, 209 pp; New York, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; London: Chapman & Hall, Limited; Printed in US by The HaddonCraftsmen, Camden, N. J. First Edition, First Issue. No Dust Jacket. Nice tight copy with some corner wear, paper boards with cloth spine and some soiling of the spine."Boynton was interested in the colorful figures that populated the book world of early America and tells their fascinating story in an entertaining manner. His account begins with the establishment of the Cambridge Press in Massachusetts Bay in 1638 and ends in 1850, by which time the production and distribution of the book had entered the modern age. This is one of the best accounts of early American bookselling, printing and publishing." (Knoll Press).
Henry Walcott Boynton was born in 1869 at Guilford, Connecticut. Boynton was the author or editor of at least twenty-four books, often using his pseudonym, John Walcott. In 1893 he received his… Read More

A brief note, 'Easter Greetings' from your friend, Wm Lyon Phelps, 1937 to Ms Sarah J Newland. Some folds present otherwise a nice piece. Would go well with a Pheps Novel or book.William Lyon Phelps (January 2, 1865 New Haven, Connecticut - August 21, 1943 New Haven, Connecticut) was an American author, critic and scholar. He taught the first American university course on the modern novel. He was a well-known speaker who drew large crowds. He had a radio show, wrote a daily syndicated newspaper column, lectured frequently, and published numerous popular books and articles.
Early life and education
Phelps' father Sylvanus Dryden Phelps was a Baptist minister. William as a child was a friend of Frank Hubbard, the son of Langdon Hubbard, a lumber merchant who founded Huron City, Michigan. Phelps earned a B.A. in 1887, writing an honors thesis on the Idealism of George Berkeley. He earned his A.M. in 1891 from Yale and in the same year his Ph.D. from Harvard. He taught at Harvard for a year, and then… Read More

A letter from Gordon Bennett, the New York Herald, to C. H. Meltzer a correspondent to cover the 4th Railroad Congress to be held in St. Petersburg on August 20th, 1872 in which Bennett is going to vacation and show up. He is writing this letter from his Paris apartment at 190 Avenue des Champs Elysees...….This letter has some stains and edge tears and as you can see from the pictures it has some conservator's repairs as well. Tearing at the creases but does mention the possible interview with General Annenkoff (see below for brief on Annenkoff). Folds present but a very nice letter. No information is available on the 4th Railroad Congress in St. Petersburg but none the less a rare and important railroad history document...despite its creases, tears and stains. Photos are NOT included.James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (May 10, 1841 – May 14, 1918) was publisher of the New York Herald, founded by his father, James Gordon Bennett, Sr., who immigrated from Scotland. He was generally known as Gordon Bennett… Read More
