The best-selling author of his latest adventure reveals the secret life of 007" in the form of an idiosyncratic Bond alphabet: A is for Air Travel, Bo is for Booze, C is for Chelsea etc and Boyd's comments under each heading. In the B category he comments about Bond's astounding capacity for booze (with examples from Moonraker, From Russia with Love and Goldfinger) although Bond rarely suffers from hangovers. Original red cloth lettered in gilt to front cover and spine with white vignette of Pringle to lower right corner of upper board; with frontispiece and three other illustrations by Fred Pegram. 198 pages + 2-page catalogue to the rear. A bump to the top right hand corner of the front board and foxing to the page block edges and the early/late pages of the book and very slight spine fade (although the gilt lettering is not faded at all). The white vignette to the front board is perfectly clear with virtually no fading or flaking (scarce thus). The hinges are firm and the book tight.. Overall an attractive VG+ copy (and quite scarce in this condition). Both issues come with loose, folded single-sheet inserts entitled Stop Press. The 1947 insert details a competition devised, and to be judged, by Ian Fleming. The 1948 insert has adjudication. The first insert precedes Flemings December 1947 Horizon piece. Fine and very rare as a set together.

Both issues are in VG+ condition. Included in the No 5 issue is an insert entitled A & I: STOP PRESS a 4-page Supplement to Alphabet and Image. On page 4 is the announcement of a competition devised by Ian Fleming to evolve a 27th character for the alphabet. Mr Fleming will be the sole judge. The prize is a book token of 5 guineas.
