New York: George H. Doran, 1924. 8vo, pp. 323. Original yellow boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine. Slight age-toning to text block, but an all but fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper, light wear and chipping to spine ends, rear panel just a little marked. First US edition, preceded by its UK counterpart of the same year. Part of the plot of Bill The Conqueror was used for the book of the Kern-Bolton-Wodehouse musical of the same year, Sitting Pretty, which opened in New York in April, 1924 -- six months before the book's publication, and a month before its serialisation began in the SEP. An extremely attractive copy of a book rarely seen in such nice condition. McIlvaine A33b

London: Methuen, 1924. 8vo, pp. 296. 8 pp. advertisements bound in at rear. Original red boards, lettered in black to front panel and spine. Lacking the dustwrapper. Small inked number to top corner of ffep., minimal wear to spine ends and slight bumping to corners, otherwise a near fine copy. First edition. Serialised in the Saturday Evening Post earlier the same year. 'I am half-way through mapping out a new novel, which looks like being a pippin. I am going on a new system this time, making the scenario very full, putting in atmosphere and dialogue etc., so that when I come actually to write it the work will be easy. So far I have scenarioed it out to about the 40,000 word mark; and it has taken me 13,000 words to do it! I have now reached a point where deep thought is required. I am not sure I haven't got too much plot, and may have to jettison the best idea in the story. I suppose the secret of writing is to got through your stuff till you come on something you think is particularly good, and…

Description:
New York: N.p. 1932. Small 8vo, pp. 16. Original stiff paper wrappers, string binding and tie. Wrappers a little darkened, slight wear to edges, but a near fine copy. First edition, first issue. 'This pamphlet owes its existence to the fact that it was rejected by nearly fifty newspapers and magazines.' They weren't bad judges. A prim little homily on the use of 'bad' language on stage, this pamphlet was produced in New York. Two issues exist: this, the first, US issue, is in off-white wrappers and has no printed limitation, while the second issue, for export to the UK, is bound in pink wrappers, has a printed limitation of 500 copies, and uses the English spelling of 'theatre'. The US issue seems much the scarcer. Barrett Clark [1890-1953] was a dramaturg and translator of French drama, who wrote an early [1920s] appreciation of the work of Eugene O'Neill. A very nice copy.

Description:
Munich: Babel, 1983. 8vo, pp. 20. White pamphlet, lettered in black to front and rear panels, stapled in to unprinted dark blue oversized wrappers. Slight discoloration to outer margins of wrappers, otherwise a near fine copy. 8 pp. of abstract illustrations by Kevin Perryman. First edition. No. 126 of 200 copies, '...printed on the occasion of the reading, recital and exhibition DAS HELLE FELD at the British Council in Munich 21st Nov. 1983'. The pamphlet comprises a printing in both English and German of Thomas' poem The Bright Field, from the 1975 collection Laboratories Of The Spirit; an abstract illustration by Kevin Perryman (who also provides the German translation of the poem); and music for flute solo by Wolfgang Niemeyer to accompany this and other poems by Thomas. An eight-page version of this pamphlet was published in 1986 in an edition of 50 copies, signed by the poet. Both versions are scarce; this seems scarcer.
