Edler was a minor Austrian author, highly regarded by Lytton but not generally by many others.

Aldington was one of the group of war poets commemorated in a memorial in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey. His 1927 biography of T E Lawrence scandalised many readers with its charges of Lawrence's being a liar, charlatan and homosexual and aroused a considerable storm, damaging Lawrence's reputation in the process. Setting the stage with a chapter on the reign of Henry VII, the book particularly considers the assault on the monasteries and other religious communities under Henry VIII between 1536 and 1540. As part of Henry's assault on Roman Catholicism, albeit more in the nature of revenge against the Pope and a convenient opportunity to recharge his much diminished Treasury with the proceeds, Henry encouraged Thomas Cromwell in his policy of assaulting and destroying religious institutions throughout England, Wales and Ireland, appropriating their incomes, distributing their assets, destroying their buildings and disposing of their lands. This book is a detailed and useful account of the process and its ramifications.

The Basilisk Press started in 1974 as a publisher of fine press limited editions, duly expanded and in 1977 opened a book shop selling not only their own publications but private press, limited edition and other finely produced books from other publishers mainly in the UK but with some from elsewhere in Europe, north America and Australia. Do not confuse this, the original Basilisk Press, with the eponymous US company selling political material of various kinds.

The work is a comprehensive and authoritative account of the honours and awards carried by the relevant armies. It lists also the regiments involved in the various battles and notes also the honours forfeited by those regiments which participated in the Indian Mutiny. Separate sections details action in the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, America, and also the West Indies and the Antipodies. The regiments of both the British Army and the Indian Army (though apparently not directly those of the East India Company).

The first impression appeared just over a year - August 1938 - from the outbreak of war and gives a good background to the political developments of the time leading inexorably to the outbreak of hostilities.The work examines fascism in various countries including in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Latin America, the US, the UK and the British Empire, and in the USSR. The author was barrister, later becoming an MP for various constituencies and serving in the House of Commons until 1974 when he went to the House of Lords, becoming Lord Chancellor in the Wilson and Callaghan governments.

Axel Springer is Europe's largest publishing and within Germany has nearly a quarter of the daily newspaper market, partly as a result of publishing "Bild" which, with its 12 million circulation, is the largest circulation paper in Europe.

Lobatto was a mathematics professor at the University of Delft and this work is a treatise on life assurance, with chapters on relevant matters such as calculating annuities, widows' pension table and mortality tables as well as more generally considering theories around life assurance.

Purcell was a prolific and accomplished writer, a sinologist, colonial civil servant, a lecturer at Cambridge on Far Eastern History, a specialist on Malaya, a poet and, as here, a satirical dramatist sending up British snobbery and the unco'guid.
