Description:
1st Edition . Paperback. Good. The Mélissa Press, Villa Vigoni, Draguginan, second edition, 1962; originally published as Blue Moon Booklet No 7 in 1931; 8vo, 16pp in all numbered only 5 to 13; printed on cream laid paper and hand sewn into brown wrappers; wrappers irregularly and lightly browned as usual and with a light crease by the upper outer corner; some foxing and light edge browning of the contents but overall a good copy of this somewhat eccentric work, by the imagist poet who had died the year of this publication. Aldington was one of the group of war poets commemorated in a memorial in Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey. His 1927 biography of T E Lawrence scandalised many readers with its charges of Lawrence's being a liar, charlatan and homosexual and aroused a considerable storm, damaging Lawrence's reputation in the process. Aldington, was friendly or otherwise associated with many literary figures of the period - Ezra Pound, D H Lawrence, Wyndham Lewis, Ford… Read More

Description:
Soft cover. Very Good. Cambridge University Press, 1977 being a reprint of the 1976 first edition; large 8vo, 173 x 245mm; pp [vi], 330; profusely illustrated throughout; magenta pictorial card covers; very slight rubbing along the edges but in very good condition. ... ... ... Setting the stage with a chapter on the reign of Henry VII, the book particularly considers the assault on the monasteries and other religious communities under Henry VIII between 1536 and 1540. As part of Henry's assault on Roman Catholicism, albeit more in the nature of revenge against the Pope and a convenient opportunity to recharge his much diminished Treasury with the proceeds, Henry encouraged Thomas Cromwell in his policy of assaulting and destroying religious institutions throughout England, Wales and Ireland, appropriating their incomes, distributing their assets, destroying their buildings and disposing of their lands. This book is a detailed and useful account of the process and its ramifications.

Russell was a pacifist and conscientious objector, a stance which led to his imprisonment in Brixton prison in 1918. In 1916, protesting as a pacifist, he was convicted under the Defence of the Realm Act 2014 and fined £100 which he refused to pay an action which resulted in his library being seized in default. Shortly afterwards he was dismissed of his Lectureship by the Council of Trinity College, this action bringing a huge public outcry with strongly voiced views expressed in support of each side. The pamphlet, of which this book is a facsimile with some additional material, was written by the mathematician G[odfrey] H[arold] Hardy and intended to give a clear and accurate account of the event. Description:
Hardback. Very Good. Watts & Co., London, 1960, 1st edition; 8vo, pp [ii], 87; original red cloth, spine text in silver; corners and edges a little rubbed in places but a very good copy. Purcell was a prolific and accomplished writer, a sinologist, colonial civil servant, a lecturer at Cambridge on Far Eastern History, a specialist on Malaya, a poet and, as here, a satirical dramatist sending up British snobbery and the unco'guid. His rebuttal of the distaste of a certain type of snob for Bertrand Russell takes the loose form of "Macbeth", interspered with explanatory comment and brings in not only the three sisters of the title but the likes of the ghosts of Samuel Wilberforce and T H Huxley as well as numerous historic and imaginary figures including bellicose generals ("I have always believed in keeping the warlike spirit alive in peacetime"), prominent Christians such as Hilaire Belloc or others of imagined note such as the Archbishop of Tooting Bec.
