Description:
Bradford, MA: 1739. 1 p. manuscript document, 9" x 7.5". An interesting marriage financial agreement between Jonathan Kimball (1673-1749) of Bradford, Massachusetts and Jane Plummer of Rowley, Mass., signed by Jane Plummer, Joseph Pearson, John Hobson and Jonathan Kimball with two seals. Both parties widowed with a large number of children, Jonathan assures Jane that she will keep use of her estate and that on her death, her children will inherit all; in the event of his death, Jane will get 40 pounds and the "Least Lower Room" in his dwelling to live in. (Kimball married his first wife Lydia Day, in 1696; she died Sept. 16, 1739). Apparently, it was not a happy union as Jonathan's will states the following: "Since my wife Jane has eloped and refuses to live with me, I give her five shillings and a pair of leather gloves." This branch of the prestigious and prolific Kimball family originated with Richard Kimball, a wheelwright who migrated from England. His son "Cornet" Benjamin Kimball,… Read More

Map good, separations along old horizontal folds but no losses to the map, a few short separations along vertical folds. A scarce bird's-eye view of Bennington, Vermont by the prolific view-maker L. R. Burleigh, likely published around the time of the dedication ceremony for the Bennington Battle Monument, the tallest structure in Vermont. Based on Burleigh's larger view of Bennington published in 1887, this view shows the town situated on the Walloomsac River, which appears in the foreground. Seen at the center top is the 300-foot Bennington Battle Monument, begun in 1887 and completed in 1889. The lines of the Bennington & Rutland Rail Road and the Glastenbury Rail Road pass through the town, and many streets and roads are identified. Total of 124 original photographs (approx. 2" x 3" to 8" x 10"), 33 of them inscribed, 25 color photos, 2 photos affixed to front and back paste-downs, 1 photo loose. Manuscript captions under the majority of images, rice paper protectors. A delightful photo album evidently compiled by Beppo and Mary Wallenda, chronicling thirteen years of their circus tours throughout Europe and the U.S. Vividly depicted in this album is the world of European and American circuses and traveling circus troupes with a mixture of publicity shots and intimate candid photos, many of them inscribed affectionately to Beppo and Mary. Beppo Wallenda here takes on the persona of both a Sad Clown with a trombone, as well as a goofy Cowboy Clown in a trio called the Wallenda Comp.-shown in the album making a movie. Multiple circuses are represented such as the Cirque Amar in France, Tom Pack's Show in New Orleans, Theatre Caumartin in Paris, Cirque Medrano, Mills Bros.… Read More

Pittsburgh: United Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1864. 16mo (6.875" x 4.5"), printed beige wrappers. vii, 13-154 pp. CONDITION: Very good, dampstains to wrappers and light wear to extremities. A revised edition of this work by an important abolitionist whose writings were a source of information and inspiration for Harriet Beecher Stowe. Originally published in 1837 in The Anti-Slavery Examiner, this Biblical argument against slavery underwent several editions. Weld's introduction recounts how, "When first published, many copies were sent through the post-office into the Slave States Most of these were publicly burned at their places of delivery," but one copy, which "fell into the hands of Rev. Wm. H. Brisbane, a slaveholding Baptist clergyman and editor in that city" found that, in writing a refutation of Weld's arguments, "the faith he scouted had become his own. He left his native state, made his slaves free, settled them in Ohio, and pulished an able work, vindicating the Bible from… Read More
