Baird's notes followed by an index and list of plates, twenty-five in all, hand-colored. This is the birds section of the zoology supplement to Emory's US-Mexico Boundary survey. All plates by Bowen called for are present and intact. Colors quite fresh and vivid. Baird later became secretary of the Smithsonian.

The wraps are sunned and show edgewear with slight loss. The folding map has one neat break along one fold otherwise intact but for the age-toning that affects the entire text. Large engraved folding map showing BC routes is awkwardly tipped onto a front blank. "New Fields for Mining, Farming, Lumbering, Fruit Growing and Ranching Reached by Canadian Pacific Railway." Fragile paper and quite scarce in any condition.

The bindings are sound and the text and plates intact. One plate in volume two (egret) is stained otherwise largely fresh and unfoxed. Offset images on facing pages of plates.
