Big John Santa Claus--Typed Manuscript Copy with Corrections. n.p., n.d., 7pp. 8.5 x 11 inches. Carbon copy typed manuscript set of 7 pages, recto only, with several corrections in pencil. Previous folds and light wear. Two holes in upper left corner from likely straight pin, no longer present. Very Good Condition. Short Christmas Eve story of a young widow and child stranded in a mining camp town with little to their name. The theatrical troupe they were touring the west with had disbanded and their luggage held for debts. To make Christmas morning a little brighter to her young daughter, Mrs. Maynard pawns her wedding ring for $2 so she could purchase a trinket for her daughter. Unbeknownst to Mrs. Maynard, a kindly miner heard their plight and canvassed the mining town for money and gifts, making Christmas morning a miracle for all. The story line is predictable and clunky but heartfelt and sincere. We find no record that this Captain Jack Crawford story was ever published. Apparently just one… Read More

In early 1842, Rowland (also known as "John Roland" or "Juan Roland") petitioned for a land grant and received the 11,740-acre Rancho La Puente. Rowland left his land under the keep of William Workman (another notable name) until 1847, when Rowland built the first private grist mill in the Los Angeles region, Rowland's Mill.
