The famous Seatonian Prize Poems, an annual award that commenced in 1750 with the bequest of clergyman Thomas Seaton (1684-1741), who dictated that the prize be awarded to the best poem in English on the subject of the supreme being. A few minor restorations of the edges and brown spots; a skillfully executed replacement marble base; in very good condition.. Oval, 20.5 x 15 inches, signed and dated on the edge "J. Carew SC, 1857." A fine bas-relief portrait in marble of Ralph Waldo Emerson, sculpted the year he voiced his support for the abolitionist cause. Joseph Carew was active between 1840-1870 and worked in partnership with his brother Thomas Carew in the firm Carew & Brothers, Sculptors, at 143 Harrison Avenue, Boston, near the Common. His sculptures were exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum on at least three occasions: 1853, 1859 and 1860. A complete run of 42 issues of an illustrated magazine published by George Kearsly between 1774 and 1777, intended to display and celebrate the art of copperplate engraving. Small 8vo, early 19th century blue diced calf, green leather label, gilt rules, decorations and lettering. Bound without the half-title. The first published play by Walter Savage Landor (1775-1864), an historical drama based on the Spaniard, Julian, Count of Ceuta, his quarrel with Roderic and the tragic consequences it had on Spain. This famous event in Spanish history was also used in verse and plays by Walter Scott, Robert Southey and Willilam Rowley. Attractive armorial bookplate on the front paste-down, signed "G.W. Eng '94"

[N.p., n.p.,] April 5, [1779], 5177. See the ODNB for Sheridan and Henderson. In fine condition.. Small ticket, 7.5 x 12 cm, printed in red, on the recto only, window-mounted on paper stock. Initialed by Sheridan in the lower right corner. In the mid 1750s, actor Thomas Sheridan (1719-1788) began delivering a series of public lectures on spoken English to promote his published discourses on the English language, education, theater and his second career as a orthoepist and educator. His lectures were occasionally delivered in collaboration with others, as is the case with this example of a lecture he gave with fellow actor John Henderson (bap. 1747-d.1785) on "A Course of English Reading." The two had previously collaborated on a series entitled "Practical Method of Reading and Writing English Poetry," and some years later on another slightly different series. Edinburgh: Printed by John Pillans for John Thomson; and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, London, 1826, 1826. First edition. OCLC records ten copies (including a second or variant issue). Some smudges and stains in the text; very good copy.. 8vo, later green half calf, green cloth boards, red morocco label, gilt decorations and lettering, t.e.g., others untrimmed. Half-title and errata leaf present. A collection of almost 90 literary anecdotes, including ones about Burns, Byron, Shelley, Boswell and John Gay, interspersed with occasional miscellaneous pieces, such as the account of the "Hungry Poet" with two of his poems. Almost all the pieces are unsigned, but at least two are attributed: A. Cunningham on the last moments of Roberts Burns and Walter Scott on the "Character of Lord Byron." There was a variant or probably second issue, with the title augmented slightly to The Curious Book; or, Literary Relics.
