Xeroxed black & white illus. throughout. Title-leaf, 39, [2] leaves, printed on rectos only. Small 4to, illus. to first leaf, staple-bound. Parma: C.D.O Communicazioni Visive, 1978. A rare mail art catalogue, the exhibition was held at the Nuova Galleria del Teatro in the Palazzo del Governatore Piazza Garibaldi; we find just one copy through WorldCat, in Italy. Romano Peli and Michaela Versari, founders of the Centro Documentazione Organizzazione (C.D.O.) based in Parma, have contributed two texts in Italian about mail art and the present exhibition. The group organized a series of mail art shows in the 70s and 80s. Dozens of artists from 26 countries are listed, including Vigo, Zabala, Duch, Bruscky, Deisler, Büchler, Kocman, R. Rehfeldt, R. Staeck, Groh, Crozier, Cavellini, Artists' Union, Szombathy, de Rook, Bzdok, Hompson, Zack, Cleveland, Banana, Gaglione, etc., etc. Many of their works are reproduced by Xerox in the catalogue. Printed in Chinese characters & Korean Hangul. Ten columns per page; variable number of characters per column. 152 folding leaves. Two vols. bound in one. Large 8vo (295 x 202mm., text block: 217 x 153 mm.), orig. yellow wrappers, new stitching. [Korea]: n.d., but ca. 1796. First edition and rare. The great rhyme books [issued in Korea] of the eighteenth century were Hwa-Dong jeongeum tongseok un-go [Examination of Rhymes in the Correct Pronunciation of China and the East [viz. Korea], with Comprehensive Explanations] from 1747, Samun seonghwi [Collected Sounds of the Three Rhymes] from 1751, and Eojeong Gyujang jeonun [Royally Commissioned Complete Rhymes of the Palace Library] from 1796. The first of these books was based on the expansion of Samun tonggo from the early eighteenth century. It innovated by supplying two kinds of sound glosses, one Chinese reading, drawing on Saseong tonghae, and one Korean reading. Description:
56; 46; 71; 48 folding leaves. Four vols. of manuscript. Various 8vo formats, cont. semi-stiff wrappers (one lower wrapper rather defective). [China:]: 18th or 19th century. Collection of materials to help prepare for the Qing civil service examinations. The Chinese civilian administration of the Qing empire was carried out by six ministries and various court agencies in Beijing, which headed the regional and local governments of the provinces, prefectures, and counties of China proper. Officials who served in most of the posts in this civilian administration were recruited through a system of examinations. While success at the highest level of the examination system was realized by only a very select few, many classically educated males passed the lower-level examinations, which conferred social status but not, generally speaking, government office. The ubiquity of the exams in the educational trajectories of elite men meant that a voluminous literature with examination-related texts accrued and… Read More

Description:
Four vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Privately Printed by Zhushen hejing zhai 竹深荷淨齋, 1859. An early edition, most likely the first, of this very rare manual on cursive script calligraphy, or cao shu. This script "received [its] final formulation during the Six Dynasties period" (Ledderose, Mi Fu, 7-8). Liang Minxian wrote in the Preface to our book that since the Han dynasty, calligraphers competent in the cursive script exceeded 200. Yet, "under our Dynasty, the learning of characters flourishes; only the cursive script remains little used." Liang thus wrote the present manual for readers to learn cursive script forms by juxtaposing them to the standard script forms. Liang Minxian (courtesy name Xigeng 西庚, style name Zhushen hejing zhai 竹深荷淨齋主人) is said to have been part of the private secretarial staff of He Shaoji 何紹基 (1799-1873), from whom he would have learned cursive script calligraphy. First edition and a nice copy from Schloss Tetschner, with the private library's attractive stamp on verso of title. Nicholson (1765-1844), architectural writer and mathematician, "was probably the most prolific communicator on the technical aspects of architecture in the first half of the nineteenth century and his influence should not be underestimated. He wrote at least twenty-seven books and two collaborations, which all went into many reprints and which were still being republished and updated by others well after his death...Furthermore his was one of the leading intellects concerning technical architectural matters and remains to this day essential reading on the period."-ODNB. Description:
16 engraved plates. Title leaf. 8vo, orig. blue wrappers bound in later cloth-backed marbled boards, uncut. London: Printed for I. & J. Taylor, n.d. [but early 1790s]. First edition, later issue. Wallis (fl. 1771-73), who described himself as an architect, is known only as the author of three pattern-books. When the present book was first issued, it was accompanied by one leaf of Taylor ads. As copies were sold off over a period of many years, a new title-page was printed to accompany the already printed plates with the Taylors' new address ("Nearly opposite Great Turn-Stile, Holborn"), along with the most recently printed Taylor catalogue. This copy is accompanied by a 16-page Taylor catalogue datable to about 1800 (they were now located at No. 59 High Holborn). Nice copy. Bookplate of Edmond L. Description:
viii, 120 pp. 4to, cont. pale blue paper wrappers (spine defective). Vienna: La Société Typographique, 1790. The uncommon sale catalogue of the collections formed by the founder of the famous Viennese music publisher. Originally from Lucca, Mechetti (c. 1745-1811), encountered financial troubles and was forced to sell his collection of thousands of items, primarily Italian prints and paintings. In the introduction, Mechetti highlights certain pieces in his collection, which was apparently not for sale by auction but rather private contract. Pages 113-20 describe a large library rich in books on the arts and history. Nice copy. This copy was inscribed on the inside front wrappers to the amateur geologist Baron de Beroldingen (see Zittel). From the library of His Serene Highness Prince Fürstenberg at Donaueschingen with his stamp on title. ❧ Cicognara 4548.

Description:
38 pp. 8vo (205 x 133 mm.), self-bound, orig. stitching strengthened with scotch tape. Paris: Clisorius & Sibire, [1814]. A very rare sale catalogue of paintings, drawings, and prints; WorldCat locates no example in North America. The sale was administered by Clisorius (n.d.), a mid-level paintings dealer, whose involvement in art auctions began in March 1802. He held a number of auctions to dissolve the inventory of other art dealers. Inscribed on the copy of the British Library is "de Mr. Lavoisière ancien négociant," suggesting this was one of those stock sales. The present catalogue describes 289 lots, including pictures by van Dyck, Parrocel, Bruandet, C. Netscher, Largillière, Guido Reni, Porbus, Goltzius, Castiglione, Porbus, A. Brauwer, Bril, etc. The first 248 lots are paintings. Each entry provides a concise description and measurements. Good copy, a little worn with an unfortunate scotch tape repair to the title-page. Description:
38 pp. 8vo (195 x 128 mm.), late 19th-cent. brown morocco-backed marbled boards, spine gilt. Paris: Paillet, Boileau & La Fontaine, An VI [1798]. The scarce auction catalogue of a collection of paintings assembled by the artist and dealer Lafontaine (1758-1835). In a recent study, Carole Blumenfeld writes: "As early as 1796, Lafontaine organized two initial sales without catalog at the Hôtel de Bullion...during the course of 1798, he effected a clear change in his commercial strategy, appreciably reducing the proportion of French artists between his two sales, in January and December, and investing the profits from the first sale in Holland over the ensuing months."-p. 220. Although she does not mention the present sale, her assertion that Lafontaine intended to liquidate much of his stock matches the explanation given by the author of the Avant-Propos, likely Paillet. He states (in trans.): "Everyone knows that around ten years ago he left an Art in which he held… Read More

1 p.l., ii, 58 pp. 8vo (205 x 134 mm.), cont. blue paper wrappers bound in brown crushed morocco-backed marbled boards (spine a trifle rubbed), title on spine. Paris: Paillet & Boileau, An X [i.e., 1802]. A rare auction catalogue describing the large picture collection (or inventory) of the history painter Martin (1737-1800). A pupil of Vien and Cipriani, he became an associate of the Académie in 1771, exhibiting at the Salon until 1798. According to the entry in the Getty Provenance Index written by Benjamin Peronnet, Martin, starting in 1776, became a part-time dealer, which was against the rules of the Académie. The painter was not banished from the institution, but he never rose in rank (i.e., reçu). Most of the pictures in the present catalogue are of the Italian school, with especially interesting examples from the 17th century. This catalogue describes 221 lots of paintings, including works by Albani, S. Bourdon, Boullogne, Caravaggio, An. & L. Carracci,… Read More

Merton (1888-1969), was a scientist specializing in spectroscopic research and was knighted in 1944 for his work during World War II. Merton's small but sophisticated collection focused on early pictures from between 1450 and 1520. The catalogue describes 32 paintings and drawings, amongst which are featured van der Weyden's Portrait of Guillaume de Fillastre (Courtauld Institute), Botticelli's Portrait of Giovanni di Pierfrancesco de' Medici (on loan at the National Gallery of Art, Washington), and works by other major artists of the period.
