Most of the newspaper concerns the murder of Winfield Scott Goss by William Udderzook following their involvement in insurance fraud. Udderzook's conviction rested on the novel use of a photograph to establish the identify of the victim. The newspaper recounts the details of the case as well as the execution of Udderzook. Also contains local news and advertisements. Very scarce. In Fair Condition: first leaf is separating along center fold with minor loss of text; first leaf and last are separating; chipping at edges; small stains on first leaf.

"Name of Owner" is not filled in, but the monthly account pages are used through August. Calendar for 1897 on back cover. Wells, Richardson & Co. made and sold analyne dyes and butter dye, baby food, and proprietary medicines like Celery Compound. Includes many advertisements for these products. This copy was compliments of Dr. B. N. Baker, physician and druggist, Rhinebeck, N.Y. In Good Condition: pencil notations on cover and on 8 of the account pages; 2 pages are browned; lightly soiled but solid.

As is typical of inexpensively produced pulp fiction of the period, it should be handled with care. Opening of the book could cause the glue to crack and pages to detach.

Buchanan, and notary public Jno. C. Noe. Darwin W. Esmond (1845-1923) was an attorney in Newburgh, N.Y.
