Single sheet, octavo, manuscript in brown ink, written on one side only, undated but probably 1842, a note from the hydrographer Vincendon-Dumoulin to Dumont d'Urville's publisher, Casimir Gide, suggesting an amendment to one of the maps in the fourth volume of Dumont d'Urville's Voyage au Pôle Sud (Vincendon-Dumoulin was the editor of the work, published in 24 volumes between 1842 and 1854): ""Si la carte du 4ème volume (iles Viti) n'et pas tirée, nous y ferons ajouter un nom d'ile qui est désignée dans la narration. Manuscript in ink written on 2 sides of a quarto bifolium, 240 x 185 mm; dated at Paris, 18 August 1831, and signed at the foot 'De Sainson, painter du voyage de l'Astrolabe, rue St. André des arts 55', the letter is addressed to 'monsieur le Baron'; de Sainson writes to ensure that a promise obtained from King Louis-Philippe in favour of his father, geographical engineer Louis-Pierre de Sainson (1764-1845), is honoured; the letter is extremely well preserved. A letter relating to the publication of Dumont d'Urville's account of his second voyage in the Astrolabe, one of the most important Pacific and Antarctic voyages of the nineteenth century. Manuscript in ink, single sheet, quarto, headed Paris, 4 février 1841, a note from Admiral Charles Baudin, commander of the French fleet in Central and South America, to the publisher Casimir Gide, advising him that he has been recommended to the explorer Dumont d'Urville to be the publisher of his account of the Astrolabe's recently returned second voyage (1837-40); signed Charles Baudin; Baudin enclosed a letter he had received from Dumont d'Urville, which was evidently returned to him by Gide as requested; the verso with address and postal markings; original folds, paper toned and roughened along one edge, but complete and legible. The lavish and monumental auction catalogue for Damien Hirst's groundbreaking sale at Sotheby's where he bypassed the gallery system and sold 223 new works directly to collectors for the staggering figure of over GBP 110 million. The five volume boxed set auction catalogue is justifiably a collector's item. A fine example.

This large-format catalogue illustrates the complete paintings featured in Damien Hirst’s 2005 Gagosian Gallery, New York exhibition, The Elusive Truth. The book includes full colour reproductions on hand-tipped plates, a raised plastic cover displaying the painting Two Pills (2004), a short story entitled The Intensive Care Unit by J.G. Ballard and die-cut windows that highlight details from the paintings. Damien Hirst has written quotes to accompany each painting throughout the catalogue.

In 2004 Sotheby's auctioned the contents of PHARMACY, the uber chic high end cocktail bar created by Damien Hirst and Matthew Freud which operated from 1997 - 2003 in London. The entire auction sold for record prices (over 11 million pounds), cementing the relationship between Hirst and Sotheby's, which would culminate in his mammoth single artist auction Beautiful inside my head forever in 2008 (selling over a hundred million pounds).

Published on the occasion of Damien Hirst’s exhibition at White Cube in Hong Kong in the spring of 2013. Amongst many new works illustrated in the publication are pieces from some of Hirst’s latest series: the ‘Entomology’ paintings and the ‘Blade’ paintings. Hirst began work on the ‘Entomology’ paintings in 2009. Each piece is made by placing hundreds of varieties of insect and beetle species into household gloss paint, in intricate geometric patterns. The series is reminiscent of Hirst’s iconic series of butterfly wing ‘Kaleidoscope’ pieces, dating from 2001, which were originally inspired by Victorian tea trays. The majority of discussions surrounding young Sydney-based artist Daniel Boyd’s particular iteration of postcolonialist history painting, video and installation work have centred on the idea of the deletion of information and history, especially in relation Boyd’s Aboriginal and Vanuatuan heritage.
