This antique piano/vocal score is in English only, with no attribution to either the libretto or the translation. The 1887 date is speculation on my part, but the original owner, one Stephen Chase, has signed the cover and dated his acquisition as "May 25, 1887". CONTENTS: internal title page, Table of Characters, Outline of Sections; 372 pages. CONDITION: this copy shows its age rather well, though the covers are soiled and shelf-worn, with a couple edge/corner chips. It appears that the front cover has been reattached with near-invisible archival tape. The interior, in contrast, is unmarked but for the names of two singers in the margin next to the characters Margaret and Faust [Mrs. Henschel & Geo. J. Parker]. It is otherwise uncompromised, with only the faintest hint of age-tanning. This very collectible and usable copy is now in a clear, snug, protective polypropylene bag with backing board.

An outstanding journal, established in 1957 by the just-created Union of Artists of the USSR - SIGNED by one of the contributors. The highlight of this particular large-format issue is an extended illustrated article about the Mitki group (signed and inscribed by one of the Mitki members, with whom I met in 1989). The Mitki - or Mitky - movement originally emerged from Vladimir Shinkarev's literary work Mitki, which consists of eight chapters. The first five chapters were written between 1984 and 1985, though the book was not finished until four years later. The complete version was officially published in 1990. Boris Khaikin and the Soviet Radio Symphony Orchestra and Academic Choir, with a cast led by Alexander Polyakov, Nina Lebedeva, Alexsei Usmanov, and Yevgeny Vladimirov. A scarce archival LP vinyl recording af Anton Rubinstein's 1871 opera, with libretto by Pavel Viskovatov (based on the poem by Mikhail Lermontov). It was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1875, then at the Bolshoi in Moscow in 1879. NOTE: This is a "live" performance, from a 1974 radio broadcast. CONDITION: The discs are not what we would consider "high fidelity" but do reflect an excellent overall musical performance.
