Description:
11 images. [1920-1930s]. 25x36 cm. Unpublished series of original drawings, likely postcard-designs, created by Ukrainian American artist Vladimir Kadulin (1884-1957), after the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. Contemporary cloth album. Kadulin was one of the most prominent and productive representatives of the Kyiv caricature school that emerged after the revolution of 1905. Certain liberties concerning the freedom of speech and media were granted by the Tsar, and as a result a myriad of satirical periodicals were created in the first years following the revolution. A lot of them were short-lived and were swiftly shut down by the government, however the wave was able to produce a number of bright young artists that became recognizable by their style and genre. One of them, based in Kyiv, was Vladimir Kadulin. He was born in Kamenets-Podolsky (Ukraine) and studied in Moscow in the local School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, then in Kyiv, graduating in 1905. Starting that year, he was able to… Read More

Tbilisi: tipografiya vostochnykh yazykov G. Guliyants, 1851. [2], 50, [2] pp. 21.5x14.5 cm. In original publisher's wrappers. Small bits of the wrapper are missing. Foxing but generally in good condition. Extremely scarce. First edition. One of the earliest productions staged on the scene of Russian theatre in Georgia. The origins of Georgian theatre go back to the ancient ritual festivals of fertility, which, after the introduction of Christianity (IV century), became the basis of the establishment of church theatre and the development of the practice of folk theatrical performances (such as Berikaoba). Yet, it was not until the mid-1800s that the Georgian society witnessed the unprecedented progress of local theatre. Following the annexation of Georgia by the Russian Empire in 1801, Georgian cultural figures got the chance to become acquainted with the advanced culture of their northern neighbor and Western Europe. In the struggle for the development of national theater, the Georgian public… Read More

First and only edition. One of 1000 copies produced. The foreword is written by Boris Ternovets (1884-1941), a Soviet Ukrainian art historian who headed the State Museum of Modern Western Art in Moscow. A catalog of a premier show of the art group "13". The group name merely defined an initial number of participants. Primarily graphic artists were involved. They sought to capture life through quick sketches "that don't tire out the paper". This association lasted for a few years, from 1929 to 1931. The first show opened in Moscow on February 10, 1929. The second exhibition was planned for 1930 but it didn't take place due to conflict within the group. Then new members came to the group. Works were displayed in 1931 and it was regarded as the third show. The founding members were D. Daran, N. Kuz'min, V.… Read More

The earliest Russian translation of the utopian novel 'Men Like Gods' (1923) was undertaken by S. Adrianov and was published the same year with the title "Liudi-bogi" [Men-Gods]. It was printed as the 12th volume within 15-volume Complete Fantastic Works by Herbert Wells at the Zemlia i Fabrika publishing house. The photomontage cover design was created by Jewish artist Leonid Feinberg (1896-1980). He is known for his poetic and artistic activities. Among his works in book design, the 1930 cover designs for 'Zemlia i fabrika' are most recognizable. In this cover, he masterfully displayed two oppositions at one time. He attractively… Read More

In 1918-1919, he studied at the workshop of Alexandra Exter and then in the Ukrainian Academy of Arts in 1920-1921. In the early Soviet period, Shifrin embarked on children's book design, primarily works by Jewish writers. Spine and some pages' edges restored, covers rubbed and soiled, otherwise very good and clean internally. Second edition. Collection of 6 articles by Leonid Krasin, Erikh Gollerbakh, Ivan Fomin, Lev Ilyin and Iakov Tugenkhold. Cover design was produced by Maxim Ushakov-Poskochin (1893-1943) who was a book illustrator, poster designer and caricaturist. He contributed to more than 200 editions. For this book, he created the laconic design that featured an avant-garde monument in its center. It resembles the Tower of Babel, Tatlin's Monument (1919-1920) and a blank leaf for an unrealized project together. Internal decorations, including avant-garde head-, tailpieces and vignettes, as well as a title page framed by Ancient columns, were created by Latvian artist and poster designer Sigismunds Vidbergs (1890-1970).
