1850. WITH AN UNRECORDED 31st MAP TOMATSU Masanori, Muneyasu KAGEYAMA et al. Edo Kiriezu. A complete set of 31 Coloured Woodblock Maps of Tokyo. 12mo, 165 x 90 folded, 490 x 535 unfolded, each bound in original pale blue wrappers, preserved in a contemporary wooden box. Edo: Owariya Seishichi, 1852-1864. A very special set of these Tokyo maps consisting of a mix of the first and revised editions, but containing an unrecorded 31st part. This part covered the Hacchobori district which was composed of the security administration; police, judge, defense, sheriff, etc. This colourful series of late Edo period maps depicts Tokyo's wards and the buildings, temples, shrines, gardens and residences therein. 1972. RUSCHA, Edward. Edward Ruscha--Young Artist, A Book Accompanying the Exhibition of Prints, Drawings and Books. Unpaginated catalogue [approximately 250 pp.] Illustrated with over 80 black & white and monochrome illustrations. 16mo, bound in original light green boards. 1972. This catalogue from a Ruscha retrospective in 1972 features a catalogue raisonne of his prints and artist's books complete excepting student work through the date of the exhibition. Though it does not include his paintings, this is a thorough catalogue with a wide variety of Ruscha's pre-1972 artistic production. Of particular note are his text pieces, photographs from the "Tanks, Banks, Ranks, Thanks" series, and drawings from his Apartment series. Ruscha and Foster business cards laid-in, as issued. Inscribed by Ruscha "To Mark-Ed Ruscha". Front hinge splitting but still intact, flyleaf with inscription loose, spine and front cover faded to light blue.

1967. BASKIN, Leonard. The Eemis Stane. Broadside. Folio size. Portrait of Hugh Macdiarmid by Leonard Baskin cut on wood by Takeshi Takahara. Northampton: The Gehenna Press, 1967. One of 500 copies. Slight creasing and a few insignificant marginal tears, but overall a fine copy of this scarce broadside.

1928. HEARTFIELD, John. Ein Sechstell der Erde unser! 48 pp. Profusely illustrated with photographs and photomontage. Folio, bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers designed by John Heartfield. Berlin: Verlag Die Einheit, 1928. A typical example of printed Soviet propaganda between the wars, full of pictures of a happy and prosperous Russia. A very scarce, apparently unrecorded work by Heartfield. A tiny piece missing from one corner, otherwise fine. Not in Siepmann.

Keller & Co 1927. First edition, later issue. In the series "Kosmos-Haus-Bücher," with typography (including binding) by Johannes Molzahn of Magdeburg. Taut uses his own family home as a prototype for his ideal affordable family house. "An essential part of Taut's work must be seen in his use of color which he had reintroduced to architecture during his Expressionist period. This provided for a great amount of articulation in the visual environment of standardized living units" (H.H. Waechter, Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects). A Spanish production in every sense, in this Picasso book Picasso illustrated his own poetry based upon his life and youth in Andalucia. The title bears reference to the painting by El Greco, an artist very much admired by Picasso. Picasso began this poem in 1957 during a period of renewed interest in his Spanish heritage. Included in the work is a facsimile of Picasso's original manuscript of the poem (written in coloured pencils). Konstanty Gutschow was a Nazi architect whose work came to the attention of both Speer and Hitler, who chose him to design one of his new cities (Führer-städte: Linz, Nürnberg, München, Berlin, Hamburg). Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1822. First Edition, a fine copy of this early Chinese grammar book which features both Literary Chinese and Mandarin. It was a major achievement of Chinese philology in the early nineteenth century, as well as being one of the earliest successful books with movable Chinese and Roman types. The folding lithograph plates were executed by Charles Philibert de Lasteyrie de Saillant. [xii], 39, [1] pp. Illustrated with an alligorical aquatint frontispiece. 8vo., 205 x 140 mm, bound in contemporary pattern wrappers, preserved in a new red half morocco box. Milan: Manini and rivolta, 1820. It is doubtful if there would be much interest in this work by an obsucre Italian academic, were it not for the fabulous frontisopiece by Antoine Louis François Sergent-Marceau. This depicts the upper part of a head, with the front of the skull removed. Inside are miniature figures of fantastical variety reminiscent of Hieronymus Bosch. A fine copy with OCLC listing only copies at Columbia, UCLA and Chicago.

Containing six different enameled pieces by Sasson, each on a linen mount signed and numbered on the verso by the artist, with a small paper pamphlet containing Ayala's poem. 4to., 215 x 215 mm, housed in publisher's linen chemise and slipcase. Sao Paulo: Julio Pacello, 1969. A delightful work by this little-know Brazilian artist who created a series of enamels to illustrate the text of her fellow Brazilian, the polymath Walmir Ayala. Loss to spine label (peeled off and worn, the fragment housed inside the box slipcase). One of an edition of 50 copies.

Masson contributed a lithograph and 5 explicit drawings relating to the homosexuality of the novel's protagonist, One of 150 copies on Vergé with the loose signed lithograph. Illustrated with colour photographs by Lucien Clergue. 28 Loose leaves each with a 4 x 6 in. colour photograph, plus 1 colour laser-print. Housed in a linen-covered clamshell box. Arles: privately printed, 2000. Eve est Noir was originally published in 1982, and is here revisited together with a poem by Clancier, reproduced in facsimile, which it inspired, and a 1982 text by Clergue. The photographs all depict a black nude model photographed in various American locations from Point Lobos on the West Coast to Rockport, Maine in the East. As new. No. XVIII/XXX of a total edition of 45. Signed by Clergue and Clancier.

1839. THAMES TUNNEL COMPANY. An Explanation of the Works of the Tunnel under the Thames from Rotherhithe to Wapping. Printed title, illustrated title, 24 pp. text; 8 plates, of which 2 are folding and 1 with flap, and a folding map. 12mo, 105 x 130 mm., somewhat later calf, wrappers with paper label preserved, in a new cloth folding box. London: W. Warrington, 1839. A classic piece of eccentric Victorian book-making. Given its small size and the various flaps and folding plates, it is no wonder that few copies have survived. The book documents what was supposedly the first tunnel built under a navigable river and was constructed under the supervision by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his father Marc.
