Description:
Melbourne : printed by Varley Brothers for E. Tootell, circa 1900. Commercial lithograph printed in colour on six sheets, each measuring 75 x 102 cm, overall measurements 204 x 225 cm (if joined), a couple of old minor stains, a very good example. The image shows the six sheets digitally joined together. An enormous Federation-era billboard advertising poster for the Melbourne boot and shoe manufacturer Tootell. Tootell's Boot Arcade was one of the largest shoe retailers in Melbourne prior to the First World War. An advertisement in the Flemington Spectator in 1914 promoted '40,000 pairs of boots and shoes to choose from'. In late 1909 Mr. Tootell purchased the business of Mr Arnold Wittner at 149 Nicholson Street, and advertising from that date on includes the addresses of both businesses; this helps in dating this poster to the first few years of the last century.

Octavo sheet, 200 x 125 mm, printed recto only; [together with] the original covering letter relating to the price list, in manuscript on the company letterhead, octavo, 2 pp, written by the owner Peter Mawdsley to an American customer, George May Powell, dated 6 September 1873, explaining the firm's discount policy for bulk orders of at least 100 plates; 'I do not do Solar printing and I do not understand the enlarging of negatives ... Many plates have been sent to America from time to time but we have no agent there'; signed 'Yours faithfully, Peter Mawdsley'; both items in very good condition, with original folds. The first incarnation of The Liverpool Dry Plate and Photographic Printing Company, a business partnership between Peter Mawdsley, a member of the Liverpool Amateur Photographic Association, and Joseph Guyton, was established in the early 1860s. Description:
Sydney, NSW : [George Howe, Government Printer], [printed 1802-06]. Printed in black ink on laid paper, 40 x 98 mm; manuscript date of 29 January 1806, with further clerical entries recording the receipt from Edwd. Robinson of 11 shillings, 'being the Amount of one Year's Quit-Rent due to the Crown the 28th of Sept. 1805 on one Grant and one Lease.'; signed D.D. Mann (David Dickenson Mann, government clerk); complete and fine. There can be little doubt that this official receipt from the Crown, made out to Edward Robinson for his (slightly overdue) annual quit rent payments for the year 1805, was printed by George Howe on the same wooden screw-press that had arrived with the First Fleet, and had been used by George Hughes to print the oldest known Australian imprints. It is an extremely early example of an ephemeral Australian printing, which could conceivably have been printed anywhere between 1802, when Howe was made Government Printer, and January 1806, when the receipt was dated and signed by… Read More

Ocean, July 25, 1878'; Croft's letter enquires about the offer by the State of Missouri of a $10,000 prize to anyone who can explain the cause of the 'Hog Cholera' (swine fever); Croft claims he is 'well acquainted with the cause, the preventive (sic), and the ease of that Disease, if taken in time. And although I am obliged to reside here on account of bad health - consumption - I am still able and would like to contend for that prize, if it is still open....'; the letter is complete, and signed in full at the foot by Thomas Croft; the letter paper with original fold lines, small… Read More

Reprint of the scarce first edition of 1940. One of the most comprehensive and valuable studies ever published on Rapa Nui culture, significant for the highly detailed and well illustrated information it provides on subject material which other studies have tended to pass over, for example the manufacture and function of utilitarian objects such as fishing hooks, stone tools, woven mats and canoes, body painting and tattooing practices, and traditional games.

[Title from printed caption beneath image]. Albumen print photograph, 90 x 60 mm, mounted on the recto of a leaf removed (by a previous owner!) from one of only 100 copies of W. B. Withers' History of Ballarat which were extra-illustrated with mounted photographs; dimensions of leaf 212 x 132 mm; in fine condition. A rare portrait photograph of Irish-Australian rebel and politician Peter Fintan Lalor (1827-1889). Lalor is regarded as the principal leader of the diggers in the Eureka Rebellion of December 1854, and his name is inextricably linked with the birth of democracy in Australia. Lalor later had a lengthy career in politics, and at the time this portrait was taken around 1870 by an uncredited photographer, he was serving as Member of the Victoria Legislative Assembly for South Grant. It is thought that only 100 copies of the first edition of Withers' History of Ballarat, published in Ballarat in 1870, were extra-illustrated (Julien Renard commenting on the Bruce Evans copy, Leonard Joel,… Read More
