Description:
Richmond: Franklin Press , 1819. VG b&w copperplate engraving. This has 9 separte images of the purported (and to some degree mythical) adventures of Capt. Smith amongst the Turks and Tartars. The 1819 Richmond edition (discussed in the Library of Virginian's recent publication, VIRGINIA IN MAPS) of "Generalle Historie of Virginia..." was the first American edition (the original London edition was published in 1624), and "The True Travels and Adventues..." was appended to this. . Vignettes of various combat scenes (from European perspective). Various images of Smith jousting and negotiating. The right upper margin was trimmed close to neatline, as bound. A fine tear along the right plateline (point of attachment) has been repaired on verso with archival tape. Folds as issued, with the image measuring 12x16 inches. A handsome engraving. .
