Description:
Typed document, legal size sheets (14" x 8 1/4"), title contents sheet, plus 24 stapled (but not all connected) leaves. Half the sheets somewhat darkened and brittle, first sheet missing part of top margin, but not affecting text, some edge wear and corner chipping, a few archival corner reinforcements; still in very good condition, considering the quality of the paper. This is a very interesting document that provides information on the early activities of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) by a group called the Progressive Citizens of America. The document seems to have emerged as a result on the "attack on Hollywood," including movie producers, directors and actors. Many of these people would be blacklisted over the next few years. The Progressive Citizens Group argues that many feel that the activities of HUAC are themselves Un-American, and show little regard for the Bill of Rights. The document describes members of the committee, their voting record on some issues, and other… Read More

Description:
Folio (14" x 21"), colored lithographed bird plate. Small chip in lower left corner, some even browning and aging; still bright and colorful. John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist. By the late 1820s he entered the publishing business, and privately published his first publication that included folio sized bird plates (A Century of Birds Hitherto Unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains). The work appeared in twenty monthly installments. This work launched a fifty-year career that would pretty much use the same format for his future publications. This plate is probably plate number four from The Birds of Asia. ODB. Gould's Works on Natural History: Index.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, dbd, but restitched, 24 pp. Likely former New York Library copy, stamp on one page, some very minor foxing; very good overall. Curious political campaign pamphlet for the presidential election of 1856. While the tract was intended to be pro Buchanan, by today's standards it seems more pro Fremont. A good portion of the pamphlet links Fremont, from a variety of sources, to the abolitionist cause. Sabin 23955

Description:
8vo, pamphlet, removed, dbd, 31 pp. Some minor foxing and aging; otherwise very good. Interesting early railroad report to shareholders that provides considerable useful historical information, including railroad construction costs and description and costs of engines and pessanger cars. While the title suggests a westward theme, much of the construction is along the Connecticut River. Also, the schedule of distances in the report seems to focus on Massachusetts and the greater Boston area.

Description:
Squarish 8vo, pamphlet, original pink wrappers, engraved frontispiece, a few text illustrations, 183 pp. Printed in poor quality pulp paper, but in surprisingly good shape, paper is brittle and wrappers have some pieces missing, especially rear wrapper, some staining and soiling to front cover and parts of wrapper, parts of spine also missing, normal browning; nevertheless a pretty decent copy. Smith was born in Kentucky in 1815, and remained a slave until Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Around that time he moved his family to Indiana, and then settled in Michigan with his wife. In his book, Smith talks about his personal experiences as a slave, and also relates observations on other Kentucky slaves and masters. While many of his stories are humorous, relating to sporting adventures and social activities, others relate to neglect, violence, and mistreatment of slaves. Smith primarily focuses on the slave family and life on a large plantation, but he also sheds light on the dynamics that… Read More

8vo, pamphlet, publishers printed wrappers, 20 pp. Crease in the middle, corners and extremities chipped a bit, small hole in the middle of front wrapper, not affecting text, wrappers darkened and faded, some mild foxing in the margins; otherwise very good. Somewhat typical report to shareholders, but this was published a year after the railroad was founded. The company actually shows a surplus of funds, and there is a very positive tone concerning future prospects and railroad construction. Interestingly, the company points to problems facing other companies who had to borrow money at very high fixed interest rates to to develop their business. Sabin 60358.
