Description:
Gelatin silver print, mounted, signed and inscribed by the photographer on the mat (slight fading). 9 x 13 in. Excellent condition.Signed and inscribed by the photographer: "FDR Funeral 1945, Edward Clark." Famed Life photographer Edward Clark took this celebrated picture in 1945 at the funeral of Franklin D. Roosevelt in Atlanta. "The area was in front of the building at the polio clinic where Roosevelt had spent so much time, [Clark] saw Navy bandsman, CPO Graham Jackson, playing away on his accordion while tears streamed down his face" (Clark, Decades).
"Ed Clark's photograph, meanwhile, of an openly weeping Chief Petty Officer (USN) Graham Jackson playing "Goin' Home" on his accordion as FDR's flag-draped casket passes by in April 1945 has, through the years, come to symbolize not merely a nation's grief, but black America's acknowledgement of Roosevelt's efforts on behalf of civil rights while he was in office" (Life website)

Description:
PATRIOTIC & ECCENTRIC COLLECTOR OF AMERICANA RODE WASHINGTON'S CARRIAGE IN THE STATUE OF LIBERTY PARADE. 7 ½ x 9 ½ inches. Photograph by Oscar G. Mason. Very good condition, with deep rich tones. Archivally framed. Born in England in 1812, Benjamin Richardson became an American citizen in 1839. In 1849 he came to San Francisco during the Gold Rush and he bought two waterfront lots at the first sale of real estate held in San Francisco. Richardson later sold these lots to the railroads for $400,000 and moved to New York. One of the great eccentrics of his day, Richardson was instantly recognizable by his waist-length flowing silvery beard and his 210-pound, five feet six inch frame. The bearded eccentric tirelessly pursued and surrounded himself with relics of American history including Lincoln relics and Washington's carriage, which he rode in the Statue of Liberty procession. This wonderful photograph shows Richardson and his great-grandson as they appeared in the Statue of Liberty Celebration… Read More

This scarce collection of Einstein's writings on war and peace was published in 1933, the year the Nazis took power in Germany and the year Einstein left Germany for the United States. In his prefatory note, Einstein writes, "Mr. Lief [the editor, Alfred Lief] has taken great trouble in collecting utterances of mine having pacifistic content and he presents them with my authorization. … I consider it my duty to confess my pacific conviction publicly. Description:
Original brown cloth. Light sunning, lower joint cracked through and partially split. Half morocco case.
First edition of Louisa May Alcott's first book. This fine Transcendentalist association copy is inscribed in an unidentified hand for Alcott's former tutor and mentor: "Miss Sophia Ford, with the best love of the Author 1855."
Sophia Ford lived with the Alcott family for nearly a year, in 1845, at their home "The Hillside" in Concord, Massachusetts. (Hillside was later renamed Wayside by Nathaniel Hawthorne when he lived there.) Louisa May Alcott at that time was 13 years old and had just gotten a room of her own and commenced to write. At Hillside she began writing Flower Fables and had the experiences which would form the basis for Little Women.
Alcott herself best described her relationship with "Aunt Sophia" in a reminiscence written in 1885: "[Sophia Ford] is one of the most prominent figures in my early Concord days, when she kept school for the little Emersons, Channings, and Alcotts in the… Read More

Description:
Two volumes. Original cloth. Light fraying to spine ends, else a fine set.
First American edition. A splendid presentation copy inscribed by Ralph Waldo Emerson to his brother: "Wm. Emerson from his brother Waldo."
The inscription is in pencil in the second volume. Emerson used this intimate signature only with his immediate family. Page 270 of the first volume bears a pencil correction apparently in Emerson's hand.
Emerson paid his greatest tribute and service to his friend Thomas Carlyle in arranging for this first American publication of The French Revolution. Thus Emerson was responsible for establishing in America the view of the French Revolution that has "molded popular conception of the French Revolution down to the present day" (Printing and the Mind of Man 304). The French Revolution "is a prose epic, a work of creative genius, in which the facts of history are illumined by the imagination of a poet" (Cambridge History).
"I know nobody among my contemporaries except Carlyle who… Read More

Generally in excellent condition, with good strong tones. The most celebrated collection of Civil War photographs, Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War contains "many of the most graphic and memorable Civil War images that have come down to us" (ICP). The photographs covered the entire conflict from Manassas in 1862 to the dedication of the monument at Bull Run in June 1865. Gardner presents the photographs, each accompanied by his descriptive text, as "mementoes of the fearful struggle," recording war as it had never been recorded before.Alexander Gardner joined Mathew Brady's studio in the 1850s and introduced the new wet-plate collodion process there. This process was employed in the photographs of the Sketch Book. When Brady's sight deteriorated in the 1850s, Gardner became the studio's chief photographer. Working with the Army of the Potomac as a civilian… Read More
