New York: A. Simpson & Co, 1867. First Edition thus. In publisher's maroon cloth with gilt spine, Very good with some bumping to cloth boards.. Signed and inscribed by Cozzens on the flyleaf. This edition has a colorful bibliographical history. Erroneously listed in Wright II 649 for the 1868 edition under the authorship of Cozzens. BAL 4010 corrects; Halkett II, 273. The edition here precedes both Wright and BAL. Included in this copy is correspondence from the Beinecke Library politely declining to purchase this particular volume, but including a copy of correspondence between Blanck and Gallup regarding the difference between the 1867 and 1868 editions, with Gallup requesting an additional entry in BAL regarding the same. Denman's bibliography of Ferguson states that "Preface" in this edition speculates as to the identity of the author and differs significantly from the "Ante-Preface" in the 1868 edition which corrects the misattribution, as Ferguson admitted to authorship the prior… Read More
