This edition has a colorful bibliographical history. Erroneously listed in Wright II 649 for the 1868 edition under the authorship of Cozzens. BAL 4010 corrects; Halkett II, 273. The edition here precedes both Wright and BAL. Included in this copy is correspondence from the Beinecke Library politely declining to purchase this particular volume, but including a copy of correspondence between Blanck and Gallup regarding the difference between the 1867 and 1868 editions, with Gallup requesting an additional entry in BAL regarding the same. First Edition. 3 volumes, lacking half-titles and ads otherwise collates per Todd & Bowden 157Aa.

Very good minus in handsome modern full blindstamped calf with new endpapers by Dragonfly Bindery, toning and brittle front free endpaper with prior owner name, contents generally clean with tear to leaf, professional repair to title page not affecting text, scattered light foxing, still a pleasing copy.. First Scottish edition, which includes, among others, poems from Gray's most famous work, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (1751). For this edition, the Foulis brothers had Alexander Wilson cut a special font of double pica roman type. Updike, Printing Types, II: 143. While the contents are generally clean, the book is lightly ex-library with reinforced spine, ghosting from tape, without slipcase, and a stamp to the rear pastedown.. Limited to 150 copies, presumably for club members. Features the preface of Samuel Pennypacker who served as President of The Philobiblon Club when this volume was published, and perhaps a bit more noteworthy, was also serving as Governor of Pennsylvania at the time. 4to.
