[Franklin County, Mississippi, 1832. Folio, 7.5" x 13". [4] pp, folded. Completely in ink manuscript, docketed on final page. Minor edgewear, old folds. The writing on either side of each leaf is visible from the other side, making the document difficult to read. Wax seal in interior blank margin of third page. Several small wormholes along one fold [several letters affected]. Signed on behalf of the plaintiff by an attorney with the surname of Stuart. Overall, Good+. Claibourn Read [1807-1845] and Thomas Lassiter [1772-1844] were related by marriage, Read having married Lassiter's daughter Nancy [1805-1865] in 1826. Duncan Magee [c.1799-1890] was the son of Willis Magee [1763-1827], one of the first settlers of Franklin County, and father of Judge Thomas A. Magee[1822-1891] after whom a cemetery was named in 1878. Gabriel Scott may have been related to the Magee family, as Duncan's mother was Asha Scott Magee.

Philadelphia: G.B. Zieber & Co., 1847. 312pp. Widely scattered foxing. Frontis with original tissue guard, plus six full-page plates. Plates toned. Front pastedown with old bookplate remnant. Original tan cloth, stamped in blind, spotted at upper forecorners, rebacked with portion of original spine laid down. Good+. This second edition is "considerably enlarged" [Graff] from the 1844 first. The final page contains a notice from the LUTHERAN OBSERVER, commending Green for being "engaged in developing the heartless cruelties of gambling, and the impositions and villanies [sic] practised by the 'sporting gentry' to the pecuniary and moral destruction of thousands of our country." "A reformed gambler's adventures among brother card-sharps, counterfeiters, etc., along the lower Mississippi, from Kentucky to Louisiana" [Howes]. Printed in different sizes and typesettings with a vignette of President Garfield in the center with a ribbon coming off each side with his dates of birth and death. Facsimiles of President Garfield's signature and those of the Committee. Light rubberstamp noting receipt, from the N.Y. State Central Committee. Light foxing, minor edgewear. Very Good.

A bizarre rumination on William Lloyd Garrison and America. "The slaveholder heard of him, and trembled with rage as he cursed him; while the negro waiter behind his chair secretly blessed him." [Cincinnati]: Published by the Cincinnati Gazette Co., 1870. Original printed, illustrated and decorated wrappers, stitched. 108pp. One chip at a blank margin, Near Fine. Pages 1-12 consist of advertisements, primarily for Cincinnati merchants, followed by an enormous amount of information on a variety of matters. The Gazette celebrates the Republican Party, which "has now been in power ten years, and its record is one of which every citizen who voted with it may feel proud. It suppressed the rebellion which armed to destroy the Union; it abolished slavery, which was the cause of the big rebellion, and it put into practical operation the great principle of the Declaration of Independence in regard to the equality of MAN. Pages 1-22 and 116-120 consist of advertisements, primarily for Cincinnati merchants. This rare pamphlet describes Cincinnati as a thriving, lively city. Jacksonville [IL]: R. Goudy, 1834. viii, 376pp. Lightly age-toned, with a couple of margin rubberstamps, but a Very Good text in its original sheep, with a rather brittle and chipped spine, upper hinge starting, gilt-lettered morocco spine label. Byrd notes, "Much of the information for this work was gathered as a result of Peck's extensive travel over the state and from personal interviews with citizens familiar with their counties of residence." [Boston?, 1896. Narrow broadside, printed on card stock, title and text beneath a photo illustration of Civil War General Daniel Sickles, resplendent in his medal-decorated uniform. Very Good. Sickles, who lost a leg at Gettysburg, endorses Republican presidential candidate William McKinley. "I know Major McKinley very well. He is a man of rectitude and honor... I shall give a patriotic vote for my comrade, Major McKinley, believing that in so doing I am repeating what I did in '64, when, as a war Democrat, I voted for Lincoln and the Union.

Bufford's Lithograph on title page, a color portrait of a seated Scott, in full military uniform under a canopy of the American flag. Light foxing, Very Good. Music only, no words, and probably printed in 1861. It was featured in 'Dwight's Journal of Music: A Paper of Art and Literature', August 10, 1861, page 152, as one of Oliver Ditson & Co.'s latest publications, and notes the richly colored, lifelike portrait of Scott. This item was also one of the titles featured in The Ladies' Repository, Vol. XXX, New Series, Vol. II, January 1862, page 340, under the heading "New Music." Box 82, Item 103, Levy Sheet Music Collection. OCLC records seven locations under two accession numbers as of November 2021.

"A tribute to commander of the Union forces Gen. Winfield Scott, shown as the mythical Hercules slaying the many-headed dragon or hydra, here symbolizing the secession of the Confederate states. At left stands Scott, wielding a great club 'Liberty and Union,' about to strike the beast. The hydra has seven heads, each representing a prominent Southern leader. The neck of each Southerner depicted is labeled with a vice or crime associated with him" [Reilly]. The Southerners are Toombs, Stephens, Davis, Beauregard, Twiggs, Pickens, and Floyd, labeled variously as Hatred and Blasphemy, Lying, Piracy, Perjury, Treason, Extortion, Robbery. Washington, 1869. Folded octavo leaf. 3, [1 blank] pp. Very Good. General Order No. 40 publishes two Acts of Congress significant for post-War Reconstruction. The first removes "all legal and political disabilities" which had been imposed on a large number of rebels. The second authorizes submission to the people of proposed Constitutions of Virginia, Mississippi, and Texas. The Constitutions required repudiation of secession and endorsement of the Reconstruction Amendments, including the proposed Fifteenth Amendment guaranteeing the suffrage. E.D. Townsend, Adjutant General, issues the General Order by command of General of the Army William Tecumseh Sherman.

Old paper remnant adhering to short closed tear at page 4 obscures all or part of the last seven words of Andrew Jackson's letter ['...have the honor to be, very respectfully...']. Good+. This attack on Winfield Scott, who finally succeeded in becoming the Whigs' presidential candidate in 1852, prints letters from Andrew Jackson and De Witt Clinton in 1817 and 1819 respectively. They charge Scott with "base and inexcusable conduct" and "overweening vanity," and call him "an assassin lurking under a fair exterior." Scott had told De Witt Clinton that Jackson had been guilty of "mutinous" behavior regarding a War Department order. Word got out to Jackson; Scott then challenged Clinton to a duel.
