A rare copy of Thierens' classic work on the history and meaning of the tarot. This is the first edition from 1930 (date as assumed, no actual date in text which is the case for this edition). Pages very good for their age, just normal age wear and some foxing spots on text edge. No inscriptions or markings seen. Possibly a FEP cut out, though nothing seems missing so potentially just a stub/remnant of paper. Original errata slip still present at p13. Binding is tight. DJ (rarely present) is very good, no major tears or clippings just a little minor creasing and tanning. Rear DJ cover has a wonderful list of related Rider books from the time. The standard work on the epidemic spread of witchcraft throughout Europe and the New World, first published in 1927 and written in Summers' typical extravagant style. A really nice copy of John Fuller's unusual examination of whether certain audio frequencies can capture the voices of the dead. This is the first edition. Pages are first rate: clean, bright and unmarked, almost as new despite its age. Just some dust gathering on the top edge. DJ is unclipped and excellent, just the slightest of age wear. A lovely copy of the first edition of Lucille Iremonger's classic critique of the 1901 Versailles 'time slip' adventure. This is the true first edition, first printing. Pages are excellent: no markings or inscriptions, just some normal minor age wear mostly on top edges. One fox spot on fore edge but no tanning or browning elsewhere. Very unusual in this condition. DJ is v very nice: unclipped, some shelf wear and minor nickings and the odd small enclosed tear. Some age wear. But generally very good indeed. A great collector's item. Many illustrations. Branston's review of the mythology of the Vikings, Angels, Saxons and Jutes and how it has impacted language, culture and later traditions. An excellent copy. See photos, all of which are of the actual copy for sale. Pages are bright, clean, unmarked and with no foxing or staining at all. Only defect is the neatest small rectangle cut from the base of the title page (see photos ) for unclear reasons but probably to cut out a stain or similar. Otherwise, pages are flawless. DJ is unclipped and intact with just some very minor chipping and wear, most evidently on the top edges and rear top, and a little at the base of the spine. A little creasing at rear top DJ. No spine fading. Cloth boards are clean and tight. A really nice copy and rare in this state. All now covered in professional, removable clear covering. 318pp illus

Frazer, a Scottish anthropologist, wrote this classic work on magic, mythology and religion in the late nineteenth century. This is the first abridged version, published by Macmillan in 1925. Frazer famously proposed that mankind evolves from magic through religious beliefs to scientific rationality. His controversial scrutiny of Christianity was excluded from this abridged edition. It was critically received by scholars, but widely read by many. Its influence was large, including on amongst others T S Eliot, Hemingway and Jung. Lovecraft mentions the book in The Call of Cthulhu. This is a very nice copy indeed. See all photos which are of the edition for sale. Uncut pages are clean and without marks, and scarcely any tanning on all but a couple of pages. Tissue paper separating first plate is intact. Boards are clean and tight with no give to the spine, just light age wear to edges and corners. Pp 763 with illustrations and book advertisements at rear. An excellent copy.

Former RAF pilot Ralph Barker wrote a range of books including this fascinating study of some of aviation's great mysteries. The stories of some of the classic aviation mysteries are here, including: Star Tiger, the first of the ill-fated Tudors of British South American Airways, and the cases involving Glenn Miller, Amelia Earhart and Bill Lancaster, among others. Pages are remarkably clean and bright, unmarked and uncreased. DJ is in fine condition, although clipped it is in a really good state with very little wear, especially for its age. A fascinating and well known book on Loch Ness, wherein Holiday examines the history of the Loch Ness mystery. He also compares Nessie with other water beasts in this comprehensive and thought provoking scrutiny of the field.
Pages are clean and unmarked with no writing or inscriptions etc. A few foxing spots to the edges, and a small light brown stain (tea/coffee?) on the top ends of the first 30 pages, but only visible by looking at the side of the book. Cloth boards fairly tight and clean. DJ is unclipped, some shelf wear at top and the rear flap has some staining and a small tear at base. Phillips and Keatman's book about an apparent paranormal adventure featuring shared psychic impressions, coded measures and treasure hunting, and all allegedly true! Nice copy of this fairly rare first edition. Pages are clean with general tanning on the outer edges. A previous owner has neatly written their name on the FEP (see photo) which also features a few foxing spots which are overwhelmingly absent anywhere else. DJ is clean with some nicks and wear mainly to top edge and base of spine. Some rubbing on back of cover but generally nice. Spine is tight.
