A Fine set of the first American edition of this work by and of George Eliot published after her death based on her life, letters, and journals, with this work created by her surviving husband, J. W. Cross, and published in 1885 following her death on December 22, 1880. The set wears its original green binding with the front boards lettered in gilt and the spines lined and lettered in gilt. The work was compiled by John Walter Cross to whom "George Eliot" was married for only about one year prior to her death. "George Eliot" is the pseudonym of Mary Ann Evans, one of the most important authors of the Victorian Era, wrote Scenes of Clerical Life (her first book - a collection of three (3) stories, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss; Silas Marner; Romola; Felix Holt, The Radical; Middlemarch; and Daniel Deronda. George Henry Williams (1823-1910), was an attorney-general and senator from Oregon who became a lawyer in 1844 with a practice in Fort Madison, Iowa Territory. After Iowa was admitted to statehood, President Pierce appointed him chief justice of the Oregon Territory. In 1883, Williams became more prominent when he rendered a decision in favor of a freed Negro, who sued his past owner for holding his three children. [He was a northern Democrat opposed to slavery.] Williams compiled this scrapbook comprised of several hundred political cartoons along with allegorical poetry and commentary. Some of his writings are signed and along with the cutout cartoons, reveal a great deal about the author and public opinion. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, with some pushing at the spine ends, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY H. M. TOMLINSON on the front free endpaper as follows: "To Helen Talland // H. m. Tomlinson." [underscored by a flourish]; a travel book of essays, being the sixth book by this British anti-war writer, journalist, essayist and traveler. Tomlinson's reporting showed the horror of World War I and, in the present work he wrote about things that can provide comfort and consolation, as well as wonder, in the postwar world.

A Near Fine signed copy of this First Illustrated Edition of this issue in boards with the imprint of the Piccadilly Fountain Press in the Publisher's original green cloth (showing some light toning at the board edges and spine head) in a Very Good + dust jacket with some toning and a short closed tear to the upper portion of the front panel, as well as some spots to the flap folds, being number 193 of five hundred and thirty-five copies issued of which five hundred [500] were for sale in England and America. Most of the textual leaf pairs are unopened (uncut) and the top edge showing this to be an unread copy.
