This is the scarce, annotated and colored version of the map of the Arkansas Surveying District "shewing the extent of public surveys in said district on the 30th September, 1840." Unlike other versions of this map that have appeared, this hand-colored version indicates by color the finished, unfinished, and relinquished townships and lines "the field notes of which have been sent to the General Land Office." The map also depicts the Arkansas and other Rivers, Choctaw and Cherokee Boundary Lines,,Louisiana Line, Little Rock and other landmarke. The size of the map is 18.5"x17.5", folded to 4"x7".

Condition: Near fine. Possibly clipped from a larger volume; left margin i trimmed with several large tears t top, not intruding into the image. Small light stain at boom, no foxing or discoloration.

His color illustrations for Poe's tales and other works are highly prized, but his other graphic work is less known. This comprehensive monograph presents some of his early sketches, private drawings, and commercial work -- with as well as the man behind the drawings and designs. This special edition, signed by Bowe, contai ns an extra suite of eight plates reproduced from Clarke's origin al drawings for "The Ancient Mariner." The gilt decoration on the front cover is from a design by Clarke adapted from the binding of the special copies of the 1922 edition of the Fair Tales of Pe rrault. This special edition rarely comes on the market. .

Text bloc k is clean and tight with no foxing. One of the plates is split i n half but intact. some of the other plates have small tears or s tains, but not affecting image. Frontispiece is detached. .

Thick 4to, 3/4 brown leather, marbled boards. 1056 pp. Willis moved from the east coast to Sacramento county in 1871, where he engaged in farming near Elk Grove, and teaching, until 1892. He then became a member of the editorial staff of the Record-Union, and continued the association for thirteen years. In 1879 he was tendered an appointment on the county board of education, of which he remained a member for twenty-three years.

CONDITION: FAIR. A clean, tight copy internally. Covers well worn with substantial rubbing to edges, corners, and spine. Front board nearly detached. Owner's inked and penciled names on front pastedown and title page.
