1920. Ulmann, Doris. Original platinum photograph, image size 8 x 6 in, [ 20.3 x 15.2] ] tipped to board, with archival window overmat, 16 x 20 inches. SIGNED in pencil on the board below the photograph by Doris Ulmann. The Rev. H.M. Wharton was the compiler and editor of the popular War Songs and Poems of the Southern Confederacy, 1861 - 1865, to which he added his reminiscences of serving as a private in Lee's army. This print appears as Plate 20, page 185, in Jacobs', THE LIFE AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF DORIS ULMANN. Doris Ulmann (1882-1934), although prolific, the majority of her photographs are unique prints, and of these, most are left unsigned. As was her practice, Doris Ulmann only SIGNED those photographs she exhibited or intended to exhibit. She is particularly well known for her portraiture, having published several portfolios in magazines as well as three books of portraits.

Archivally matted on rag board with window overmat. Signed in the plate by the photographer. Fine. The image is a fine full-tone photogravure from CAMERA WORK 31, 1910. Frank Eugene Smith (1865-1936, NYC) studied at the City College of New York and in Munich, at the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. He was initially a painter and turned to photography, primarily portraiture, in the Pictorialist style. He held his first exhibit at The Camera Club of New York in 1899, was elected to The Linked Ring in 1900, and in 1902, he was one of the founding members of the Photo-Secession. There is a 1/16 inch closed tear at the tip of the dust jacket on the rear, else a fine cloth copy in illustrated dust jacket. Aaron Siskind became a freelance photographer in 1932, the same year he joined the Photo League in New York City. In 1936, a group of photographers from the Photo League formed a production unit they called the Features Group and began a three year project documenting Harlem. In 1940, Siskind joined with Max Yavno, and writer Michael Carter, on another project in Harlem. Neither of these projects were published due to the incursion of the Second World War. This volume brings together Siskind's photographs for the first time from both projects. SIGNED by Siskind on the title page.

The pastedowns are discolored as always found, due to the binder's glue. Otherwise, a fine as new copy in the matching cloth slipcase. Laid-in is a single printed sheet with text and a photographic image by Callahan, issued by Aperture to advertise for sale its stock of 75 copies of this book. The print quality was as fine as could be found to date. Includes a comprehensive bibliography prepared by Bernard Karpel, Librarian for the Museum of Modern Art. Limited to 1500 copies. This copy is additionally SIGNED by the photographer.

[Tempe, Arizona]: School of Art, Arizona State University, 1985. First edition. Vroman, Harry. Small 8vo., [24] pp., 4 full-page b&w illustrations. Stiff wrappers. Fine. Vroman, known for his landscapes, traveled the Southwest in his 1936 Chevy, with a platform welded to the roof to gain a better perspective. In the 1940's he lived in a small house behind Ansel Adam's studio and work in Adam's darkroom as an assistant before they parted ways. This volume contains two short autobiographical essays. No. 17 of the History of Photography Monograph Series; limited to 200 copies.

A large, 15 x 12 inch portrait photograph with contemporary color of either crayons or pastels, with added charcoal, c.1900. The photograph was mounted to a cardboard backing when made; the backing board is acid and shows the ghost of a transfer which reads (in reverse) in pencil, 3rd (and) Williams. A fine example. Since this photograph has been entirely colored with turquoise blue background, brown skin-tones, and charcoal for coat and hat, we surmise by the weight of the base paper that this was initially a bromide print. The hand-colored and painted photograph has been with us since daguerreian times and continues to be made today. Stapled into decorative stiff wrappers, which are edge rubbed, creased at upper tip, with droplet stains on the rear wrapper. The text is lightly worn and includes an errata slip. A good copy. The Blair Camera Company, manufacturers of cameras, lenses, plate holders and related accessories was established 1878, operated in Boston from 1881 to 1899, relocated to Rochester, New York in 1899 when it was acquired by Eastman Kodak and operated as an independant company until 1908 when it became a division of Eastman Kodak. The Hawk-Eye camera, a line developed for the budding amateur maket, was first made by the Boston Camera Company and acquired by Blair Camera in 1890.
