Description:
Kyiv: Vyshcha shkola, 1974. 88x58,3 cm. Near fine. Design by I. Eshenko. This Ukrainian poster from a print series "Sportivnye igry" [Sports Games] features illustrative instructions to field handball. It contains images of basic options for catching and throwing a ball, actions of a goalkeeper and a scheme of a handball court. This team game had emerged in the Russian Empire in approximately 1909. Both variations of 11x11 and 7x7 players were popular. Since the 1960s, the latter has prevailed - so this 1970s poster is even more interesting. In 1955, the All-Union Handball Federation was created. In 1956, Vilnius hosted the first Soviet Handball Championships, separately for women and men. Soviet national teams joined world competitions in the 1960s. A Soviet men's team first joined the 1960 world games while the women's team first took part in the 1962 world championship. The Soviet women's team won gold in 1982 world competitions. In the 20th century, handball was widespread in Ukraine. In… Read More

Description:
Moscow: Gosizdat, 1928. 92, [4] pp. 15х12 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Slightly rubbed with minor fragments of the spine lost, water stains on verso of the covers, otherwise very good and clean internally. Third edition printed the same year as the second. Very rare. Lithographic cover design doesn't indicate any artist, but it is really impressive in showing workers' crowds against a background of factories. The little handbook is written on productive organization of mass performing in workers' clubs. It contains sheet music and lyrics for 34 "vigorous, revolutionary songs", as well as brief instruction on how to get together members of a meeting and make them sing after the event was held, along with participation of an art group and music ensembles. The book was composed by Soviet conductor and pedagogue Iosif Nemtsev (1885-1939). He had been arranging various choirs since the 1900s, including in schools and orphanages. He greatly influenced the Soviet choral music and promotion of the… Read More

Harbin: Iakor', 1927. 217 pp.+7 pp. of ads. 13x9,5 cm. In original printed wrappers. Good. Rubbed and soiled, corners of front cover lost, pencil marks occasionally. Extremely rare emigre edition. This handbook contains an orthographic dictionary based on 1917 changes. Prepared in the early 20th century, the reform of orthography was accepted by the Provisional Government in May 1917 and formalized by a Bolshevik decree in late December 1917. In October 1918, all Bolshevik printed matters were forced to switch into new orthography, excluding some "excess" letters and simplifying standards of writing. Despite the fact that professional linguists developed the reform long before the revolution without any political goal, its final introduction by Bolsheviks at the same time as they seized power seriously worsened the attitude towards it. New simplified conventions weren't used in most publications printed in White-controlled territories and at emigre publishing houses. Partly, Russian emigre culture… Read More

Leningrad: Triton, [1930s]. 15 pp. 21,5x15 cm. In original wrappers with letterpress design. Covers detached, small fragments of covers and blank corners of two first leaves lost, otherwise very good. One of 1000 copies. Very rare with no copies located in Worldcat. Sheet music for 'Harvest March' (1929) by V. Mayakovsky. The poem was written on socialist changes in the countryside and the Soviet agricultural organization in general. After NEP, kulaks were denounced as enemies of the nation and collectivization was promoted. This campaign was supposed to reach harvest twice as much and the poem's lines were the slogans. The sheet music was printed as a propaganda piece and spread among amateur art sections in provincial clubs. The music was composed by musician Valerian Bogdanov-Berezovsky (1903-1971). Contributed to Leningrad and Moscow magazines, he soon became one of the main music critics in the USSR. Also, he wrote over 250 books and articles on the Soviet music and theater.

AN INTERESTING SOVIET MANUAL ON THE WAYS OF INCREASING MENTAL ACTIVITY WRITTEN BY THE VICTIM OF SOVIET REPRESSIONS JOSEPH REBELSKY IN 1929. The establishment of the Communist regime posed new challenges to the Soviet Society. Political authorities expected a "New Soviet Man and Woman" to develop qualities that would reflect surrounding circumstances of post-scarcity and unprecedented scientific development. As a result, one of the central places in the 'construction' of the new Soviet society was given to the problem of mental activity and its improvement mechanisms. Against this background, along with the birth of such efficiency-worshipping organizations as the League of Time, the Soviet reality witnessed the emergence of numerous editions dedicated to the subject matter. Written in 1929, this book represents an… Read More
