Strahorn originally went west as a correspondent during the conflicts with the Sioux in 1876, but eventually ended up as one of the West's biggest publicists. Very Good. A handwritten speech denouncing slavery, likely written in mid-19th century (1840s-1850s). Author and publication date are unknown. Twenty-nine pages of manuscript; the speech is 26pp and is written in ink and 3pp are notes about other men's beliefs about slavery and are written in pencil. Bound with string. Leaves have light toning and foxing, else very good. The author of the essay begins with "the subject in which I am to enter is the one which has agitated every nation where its baneful influence has been felt." The author then continues with several pages of abolitionist ideals. A few lines of note include: "To live a life of bondage is more intolerable than pen can describe or language express" [p. 3] and "No man on the earth can refer to any period since the creation of the world in which a more unjust unholy unprincipled unfeeling power has been exercised over any part of the human family than that of American slavery" [p. 9]. Very Good. Mounted photograph depicting the hanging of Elliott Ellis Lyons on April 17th, 1903 in Eugene, Oregon. Photographer is unknown. Previous owner's name and address written in ink on verso, along with "1903 hanging of Elliott Ellis Lyons for the murder of Sheriff W. W. Withers April 17, 1903 Eugene, Oregon Lane County." Photographic print measures 4 ¼" x 3 ¼" without mount, 6 ½" x 5 ½" with mount. In very good condition with light chipping and soiling to mount; print has light wear to edges and light soiling. Lyons, a convicted thief and murderer, shot and killed Lane County Sheriff W. W. Withers while Withers was trying to apprehend him for horse theft. This took place February 5th, 1903; Lyons escaped after the shooting but was apprehended a few days later and convicted soon after that.
