Description:
London: Oxford University Press, 1937. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. viii, 348 pp + illustrations from photographs, with index, illustrated endpapers. Light shelf wear (including lightly bumped upper corners); text clean, binding sound. No dust jacket. Hatfield was born in Britain but decided to migrate to Australia at the age of 20, working his passage as a steward and landing at Port Adelaide in January 1912. "Hatfield soon became a first-rate bushman. For many years he worked in the north of South Australia, Central Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland as a station-hand, stockman, drover, cook, horse-breaker, kangaroo-shooter, dingo-trapper, book-keeper, seaman, miner, fruit-picker, painter and timber-worker. In 1915 he attempted to join the Light Horse but was rejected because of injuries. Over the years he sympathetically studied Aboriginal languages and customs" (Dictionary of Australian Biography).

Description:
New York: H. Seibert & Bro. Rare lithographed poster advertising a winter scene from a performance by the Ida Siddons Burlesque Company -- a popular, mostly female, troupe of entertainers that toured widely in the United States in the 1880s. Ida Siddons was born in Niagara Falls in 1857 and first appears in newspaper stories as a performer with a "skipping rope act" in the late 1870s. An 1881 article in the San Francisco Examiner mentioned the "first appearance in 'Frisco of the talented eastern character dancer Ida Siddons." Siddons' 1933 obituary in the Brooklyn Times Union credits her with having "organized the first burlesque company in the country." Whether that is accurate we cannot say, but she seems to have launched her company in 1883, when newspapers from several different states refer variously (and with variable placement of apostrophes) to "Ida Siddons' Female Minstrels," "Ida Siddons' Female Mastodons," "Ida Siddons' Female Mastodons and Burlesque Company," and "Ida Siddons' Female…

Description:
Philadelphia: Franklin Printing House, 1883. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 27 pp, in original printed wrappers. Near fine, with a few tiny chips. Pancoast was a Philadelphia lawyer who traveled to Dakota Territory in 1882 with an Episcopal Mission and spent a month visiting the Sioux Agencies. Upon his return, he and his traveling companion, Herbert Welsh, founded the Indian Rights Association, a primarily white organization dedicated to promotion equal protection under the law, education, citizenship, and land ownership for Native Americans. In this pamphlet, Pancoast offers a narrative of his travels and lays out his reasons why "civilizing" the Indians -- "making them self-supporting, industrious, and peaceable" -- is a "national necessity" and can best be accomplished through education.
