Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 47, missing all 3 plates; very good. First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meat, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing. Original half black morocco; elaborate hand-painted photo album consisting of 1 hand-illuminated leaf with signature 'Faith Bell' and date '1904', 14 cardboard leaves with hand illuminated calligraphy, illuminated borders and margins framing 34 gelatin silver or albumen photographs, mounted; with loose photograph of a young woman, presumably the author, and silhouette portrait of a woman inscribed "Yours lovingly/ Faith Bell/ 27th.Jan. 24" to reverse; a little occasional foxing, very good. A unique album, richly illuminated in gilt and coloured inks with charming watercolour vignettes surrounding atmospheric photographic views of the Lake District. The illumination covers different styles from the medieval to the Art Deco. This was clearly a labour of love that remained unfinished - the last illumination is incomplete, petering out into pencilled guidelines, while the last 15 leaves of the album are blank. Original wassa goatskin-backed terracotta cloth boards, all edges gilt, in the original watered silk-lined black cloth-covered drop-back box with illustrated title mounted on front cover, in the original corrugated cardboard box, lettered in terracotta print, numbered by hand (a little rubbed); pp. 208, highly illustrated in colour and black and white throughout; fine. The most beautifully produced of all the signed limited editions published after Mandela's release from prison. This one is limited to 425 copies (this being numbered 299 by hand) and comes with a loosely-inserted original mounted, and sleeve-protected, portrait after a photograph taken by Benny Gool, signed by Nelson Mandela and dated October 6, 1996.

First edition, very scarce, especially in this condition. 'The object of this book is to give as fully as possible the essential history of the Russian Navy in the past, a full and detailed account of the Navy as it is, and, finally, to include all those side questions which, though not directly naval matters, are yet intimately connected with the Russian sea service' (Preface).

Original blue cloth, lettered in gilt, with the rarely seen dust-wrappers (not price-clipped); pp. 330, plates after photographs and facsimiles, sketch maps; wrapper minimally frayed and spotted; offsetting from edndpapers to beginning and end, otherwise a little spotted; an exceptional copy in the superior binding, not lettered in yellow. First edition, in the first issue binding and the dust-wrappers. Frank Percy Crozier was a controversial Anglo-Irish soldier who first served in South Africa, Sudan, on the Western Front, in Lithuania as military advisor, and most importantly in Ireland from the latter part of WW1 on wards, where he slowly, and painfully, turned pacifist, disgusted by the British (and his) conduct in Ireland. 'He was largely responsible for the downfall of the Coalition Government over the Irish Policy in 1912' (front flap).

White Star Line is here extolling the beauty and charm of the Carribean as holiday destination and cruising ground. In the section on a Venezuela excursion Simon Bolivar is described to the US Americans as 'the George Washington of Venezuela' (p. 21). - The title of this brochure is taken from the New England poet Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.'s The Chambered Nautilus. Publisher's blue cloth, with illustrated dust-wrapper, titled in gilt to spine, and endpapers illustrated in blue; pp. [iv], 204; black and white photographic illustrations; spine slightly sunned (as ususal), otherwise a very good copy in the uncliped wrappers. First Edition. Chatwin's first book set the tone for much of his subsequent travel-writing. As the dust-wrapper affirms: "Writing with sympathy, humour and clarity of observation, the author charts not only the exotic contrasts of Patagonia's landscape, but also the strange life-histories of the eccentrics and exiles who live there. Original quarter red morocco, lettered in gilt, grey cloth boards, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers; many illustrations after drawings and paintings by William Russell Flint, text printed in black, red and blue; vertical crease to rear endpaper otherwise a fine copy, preserved in the original blue cloth slipcase. Limited edition of only 1,000 numbered copies for sale; signed by William Russell Flint's son, as Flint senior died during production of the volume. Before he died however, William Russell Flint initialled, in pencil, the endpapers (front and back) for all copies of this book.

Original blue cloth, pp. xxviii, 478, frontispiece retaining tissue guard, plates after photographs, folding map at rear; spine and parts of rear cover faded, internally, apart from very few and inoffensive spots a very good copy. First edition, second and transatlantic issue (first, 1903, and identical). A rather unusual book, starting with Northern Japan and then reporting much about convicts and native peoples in Eastern Siberia. Charles Henry Hawes (1867-1943) was an anthropologist and Associate Director of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and this is one of the first Western books to deal with these remote regions in geopolitical and ethnographic context.

Original grey-green cloth, gilt vignette of camel-rider to upper cover, lettered in gilt to spine, top edge gilt; pp. xx, 447; photographic plates, 3 maps including one large folding and in colour; very light rubbing; a little brown-spotting to endpapers, otherwise very good. First edition. An important account of travels in the Arabian peninsula. Cheesman had known Boyd Alexander (author of From the Niger to the Nile) and became fascinated with the idea to travel through the Arabian desert. Following Alexander's death, and with the encouragement of Percy Cox, Cheesman made a journey in 1923-4 from Oqair on the coast of the Gulf of Bahrain to the oases of Jabrin and Hufuf in the Arabian interior. Cheesman was the first man to map the Arabian coast from the Gulf of Salwa to Uqair. In 1924 he fixed the position of Hofuf and identified the site of ancient Gerrha. Uncommon first edition of a first-hand travel narrative covering Moab, Jericho, Madaba, Mshatta, Amman, Galilee and Samaria, with Nablus, Samaria, Haifa and Carmel, Nazareth and Tabor. Ada Goodrich Freer (1857–1931) was a British folklorist and psychical researcher who in 1901 went to Jerusalem, moving on in 1911 to Cairo and wrote a couple of books on the Middle East.

Original red cloth with a very stylish front cover design and spine lettered in gilt; pp. viii, [4], 240, one map, plates after photographs; apart from fading to spine and light offsetting from endpapers, a very good copy of a rare title; gift inscription to front fly-leaf. First edition. This is a British missionary's first-hand report of travelling to Turkey, starting at Lake Van, through Kurdish and Armenian Territories to Gaziantep (Antep) in the south east of Anatolia, not far from the Syrian border. Campbell witnesses the ethnic tensions between Turks, Kurds, Armenians and Assyrian Christians and obeserves how the Ottoman authorities try to navigate through the chaos, and to contribute to it. Gaziantep had a large Christian college, Central Turkey College, or Aintab College. - One plate is after a photograph, which must be one of the earliest skiing photos taken in Turkey.
