Description:
Richard Hoggart was an academic and a social activist. His seminal work, The Uses of Literacy, was a study of working class culture. He then founded the Centre for Cultural studies at the University of Birmingham. He left to become director of UNESCO in Paris, France. This study looks in depth at the organisation's strengths and weaknesses.

This copy is reasonable for its age. It is clean inside with no marks, but has a dusty top edge and a bit of foxing. The jacket has a spine fade and has evidence on the inside flaps of discolouration. However, signed copies are notably scarce.

Description:
This is the British first edition of Anne Tyler's first novel, written when she was a young woman. Now widely regarded as perhaps America's best known female novelist of homespun stories. This edition has become scarcer as each year goes by; primarily because the first was produced mainly for libraries and for review purposes. It rarely comes up for sale.A Very Good copy with no internal or external marks in a nice jacket. The price of 25 shillings is present and it has no tears or blemishes.

Description:
This is a special rebinding , being 1/13 lettered issued by the Scorpion Press in 2022 with a new introduction for the "Books into Film" series. The introduction states: Recently, critics and social commentators have revived an interest in Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. They point to his place as a unique instigator of the wealth of 'true-to-life' crime books, films and TV shows that now dominate our reading and viewing habits. The almost- documentary style that Capote employed in his seminal work has become a standard by which so many other works of this genre are measured. It was not only Capote's ability to piece together details and his clever narrative construct ion that established this benchmark, but also his profound understanding of the potential for good and evil in humanity. It is perhaps true to say that this 'perfect literary storm' set a standard by which all future works of this nature would be judged. Capote's ability to grip the reader and thus evoke deep and haunting emotions… Read More

Description:
The binding is original as are the yellow endpapers and the most attractive folding colour chart. The book was a significant piece of propaganda to propose social reform allied to ethics in the war against poverty in England. The Sally Army had a major effect on the reforms that were introduced in the early 20th Century under the Liberal administration such as pensions. The book also gave significant support the the growth of charities that looked after the poor and destitute.

This copy is square and tight, with edge wear at the tips. The last two pages of adverts for the Army's publications are loose. No inscriptions except in pencil and an attractive bookplate and in print on the front free end parer - "For the pps of "The Cross". ".
