Description:
1994. BROWN, James. I Am For That. By Max Blagg. Three paper folders wrapped in Bedouin silk, in a protective mylar cover, in a new cloth folding box. San Francisco: Hine Editions, 1994. Divided into three sections, this unorthodox book consists of original drawings, engraving, collage and a hand written poem. Using paper handmade by students in Morocco as well as paper from the renowned Dieu Donne, the sections are loosely inserted into a beautiful Bedouin silk wrapper. The overall feel of this book is completely unique. Signed on the colophon by Blagg and Brown. One of 17 copies.

Roma: Comando generale della G.I.L., 1936. A typical production of the fascist era showing the physical education of youth. 1937. AGENZIA STEFANI. Il Duce in Libia. Unpaginated, illustrated throughout. Oblong folio, 295 x 330 mm., bound in publisher's illustrated wrappers. [Milano]: [Alfieri & Lacroix], 1937. One of several volumes published to celebrate Mussolini's various state visits, this one being to Libya. Given the limitations of the subject matter, one has to give the designer credit for coming up with a book with at least some imagination. Rare, with OCLC listing only 1 copy worldwide, in Germany. 1938. FASCISM. Il Fascio Primogenito. 456 pp., illustrated throughout. Folio, 360 x 290 mm., publisher's decorated cloth. Milano: Esperia, 1938 Possibly the most stunning of the many works of propaganda published to extol Fascism and Mussolini during his rule. In this work, the Italian fascist photobook reaches its apogee. The book exhibits a masterful use of typography and photography which truly combine to create a monumental work. As with almost all the other books in the genre there is an unfortunate overabundance of images of Il Duce. Minor soiling to the cloth, and 1 leaf with insignificant waterstains, otherwise in fine condition. OCLC lists only the copy in the Tate.

1860. COOK, G.D. & Co. Illustrated Catalog of Carriages and Special Business Advertiser, New Haven, Ct. [iv], 226 pp. Oblong 8vo, 170 x 245 mm., bound in original embossed brown cloth, rebacked in tan calf, spine gilt. New York: Baker & Godwin, 1860. This illustrated catalog is a wonderful study of mid-nineteenth century American commerce. G. & D. Cook, established in 1794, produced this catalog not only to showcase their extensive line of carriages, but also to introduce the numerous commercial enterprises in and around New Haven, Connecticut. Ninety-seven of the 145 carriages found in the descriptive price list are illustrated. Those in search of the "Alabama Six Seat," "World's Fair Buggy," "Eureka Jump Seat," "The Gem," or "Pride of the South" would have to look no further than this catalog. In addition to carriages, the catalog also features a wide range of products from Connecticut and New York, so numerous that an…

Description:
2007. GOLDYNE, Joseph. The Invisible Collection. By Stefan Zweig. Illustrated with an original etching by Joseph Goldyne. 8vo, 230 x 140 mm., bound in original black morocco-backed sepia-coloured paper over boards. New York: Ursus Books, 2007. A handsome new edition of this classic fable about collecting. Zweig's story, set in Germany in the aftermath of the First World War, is timeless. It eloquently evokes the magic of collecting, the excitement of dealing and the pleasures and complexities of ownership. Joseph Goldyne, the distinguished California artist who is himself a renowned collector, has thoughtfully produced an illustration which successfully solves the problem of how to illustrate a book, which on first reading would seem to defy the concept of illustration. Peter Koch has designed and printed as elegant a version of Zweig's story as one could hope for. One of an edition of only 50 copies elegantly printed by Peter Koch in San Francisco, and containing a signed etching by…

1927. CHERNIKHOV, Y.G. Iskusstvo nachertania [The Art of Graphic Representation]. 77, [3] pp., with black & white illustration throughout. 8vo, 170 x 130 mm., bound in publisher's white wrappers, in a new green cloth folding box. [Leningrad]: Knigoizdate'stvo Akademii khudozhetsv, [1927]. First edition of Yakov Chernikhov's extremely rare first book. Chernikhov (1889-1951) was an artistic visionary, best known for his elaborate architectural fantasies in his later works. The present book is an instructional for neophyte art students encouraging them to depict beauty and movement through abstract representations. Although a considerably more humble publication than his subsequent books, its fragile format has rendered it quite scarce. Neat ink ownership inscription on the cover and title page dated 1930. Spine a little worn, a near fine copy. Not listed on OCLC.

1937. GARATTI, Celso Maria. Italiani di Mussolini in A.O. 569 pp., illustrated throughout. Large folio, 405 x 305 mm., bound in publisher's cloth with spine made from copper tubes, with onlaid metal axe on the front cover. Bologna: L. Cappelli, 1937. A stupendous object, in a binding that is completely over the top. Fascist bombast at its most preposterous. The binding mimics the fascist fasces, and even though this copy bears the number 1127, presumably, it was not produced in a large quantity, and represents one of the few bindings which could be melted down and put to a more useful existence. The layout shows the surprising influence of the avant-garde of the twenties and thirties, which is at variance with the subject matter, namely the conquest of poorly armed Africans by Mussolini's military might. Surely one of the most striking and rarest of photobooks. Waterstain on front cover, endpapers foxed, otherwise a fine copy. Very rare, with OCLC recording just fives copies in the…
