Cunningham, Professor D. J. With David Waterston, Professor M. H. Cryer, and Frederick E. Neres

  • Book condition: Near Fine
  • Quantity available: 1
New York: Imperial Publishing Company, 1911. Photos Mounted on thick Stock. Near Fine. Section IV ONLY. A remarkable set of stereoview cards with real photographs of aspects of the anatomy of the head and neck. Each stereoscopic photograph is mounted on a thick card stock, approximately 7" x 9". At the bottom of each card is mounted the image, and above that is a detailed description with numbered key in many cases for what the viewer is seeing. Failing having an actual dissection in front of one, this is perhaps the next best thing - with a stereoviewer (not provided) the doctor could see not just a flat image, but also depth and texture. This section complete with all 36 cards, numbered 1-36. Each is in near fine condition with a bit of curling to the cards, and just a touch of minor wear. Also included is the "Title page" card for this section noting which cards should be present. The Title card has a handwritten note on it at top back. Provided with the remnants of a slipcas ... Mercatoria, St. Leonards-on-Sea: Barr & Budd Printers / British Trichological Association, 1887. Leaflet. Very Good. 4 pages, 7 3/8 x 14 3/4 inches. Documents the inaugural speech of G. H. Wheeler, the second time President of the British Trichological Association. In a very dense small type, Wheeler describes in some detail the state of the science at the time, and his experience and studies with baldness and it's supposed causes. A realist, he notes: "We do not for a minute entertain the idea that Trichologists will ever make hair grow on all bald heads, any more than our best Physicians can raise the dead. These deeds are only promised by men who have not studied the hair one hour, Hairdressers and others who only sell their concoctions for gain." Content leans much more towards a pseudo-scientific analysis than it does quackery. Wheeler notes they are attempting to set up a hospital under a Dr. T. Gurney for the treatment of Hair Diseases. Interatomic Forces

Lennard-Jones, J [ohn] E[dward]

  • Book condition: Near Fine
  • Quantity available: 1
Calcutta: The Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, 1939. Pamphlet. Near Fine. "As one of the first scientists to make a career of theoretical physics and theoretical chemistry, Lennard-Jones was an outstanding example of a type that has now become familiar in the physical sciences. His genius was not to make fundamental discoveries or to conduct crucial experiments but to realize quickly the potentialities of new theories proposed by other scientists and, by ingenious and painstaking calculations, to develop them to the stage where they could be applied quantitatively to a wide range of experimental data. His major contributions were in three closely related areas: the determination of interatomic and intermolecular forces; the quantum theory of molecular structure; and the statistical mechanics of liquids, gases, and surfaces." -DSB 7/8:185-6.
