Eight plate pamphlet with illustrations taken from a larger work. Condition is good, wraps are separated about 2 inches at top of spine, wraps show moderate general wear. The interior is near fine, no markings, creases or vandalism. This pamphlet is uncommon: WorldCat (#30674379 and 40680914) shows 6 copies and search shows none for sale. This series was a precursor to the Frank Netter series (Netter worked with this publisher in the early 1930's). The larger work this comes from has exactly one copy on WorldCat (955413799). It is possible the pamphlet was published before the larger work. Publishers sometimes put out these pamphlets as the plates became available in order to promote the upcoming work. Medical ephemera. Ten (of 12) volumes: Haustellata volumes 1-4, Mandibulata 1-6, lacking volume 7 and supplement. First editions by Baldwin and Cradock, London. 1828-1835. Overall good condition. Complete with all plates and pages. Bindings are mixed. Seven volumes light tan full leather (goat?) with Yapp style bindings. Marbled endpapers and edges. Two half leather, marbled board bindings and one museum library rebind (~75 years old). The interiors are excellent except for vol. 6 Mandibulata which has water toning upper outer corner affecting last quarter of volume and final two plates. Haustellata volume 4 has museum library stamp on title page and plates are in a back pocket; has interesting old scientific marginalia. The value here is in the matching 7 volumes (Haustellata 1-3; Mandibulata 1-4). First appearance of Darwin's work in print. See Freeman pages 19-20. Mandibulata volume 1. 1828. Nineteenth century marbled boards with modern cloth spine. Front blank and pastedown water stained with slight bleeding onto title page (see image). Many leaves uncut. Plates in excellent condition. Paginates: blank, iv, 184, (4), 9 plates. Complete. This set became famous for Darwin's contributions to later volumes. A very good copy. Circa 1875 edition of popular captivity narrative. Nelson & Phillips, New York. Spencer was 11 when captured in 1792. Brown blindstamped cloth, gilt title on spine. Condition is Very Good: Recased using original boards sometime in last 40 years. Modern endpapers. No interior writing, occasional foxing, some smudges, old corner folds. Small hole pp.13/14 affecting a few letters. Binding is sound. 160 pages with 4 plates and 4 engravings embedded in text all included in pagination. Contents bound at end as usual with this book. The plates and engravings are same topics and locations as the 1842 edition but are by a different engraver. True first edition is 1835 in either New York or Pennsylvania. 1836 hardcover first edition in two volumes. Condition is Fair: main point in its favor is that it is complete. In old, likely original, blue blindstamped cloth. Vol. 1 spine missing lower half of cloth. Interior is moderately to heavily foxed, occasional pencil notes, no vandalism. Binding starting on vol.1 front hinge, all others holding well. At the time of listing I found none for sale and only one copy in WorldCat / OCLC.
