Description:

Tokyo: Domoto, Kumagawa and Perkins, 1939. First edition (pp. 302, index). Signed by Newsom on the dedication page. Illustrated with hundreds of fine b & w photographs, watercolour sketches, engravings from pen-and-ink drawings, etc., depicting virtually every aspect of traditional Japanese gardens-- e.g., ‘stones of three directions’, varieties of sleeve fences, garden maps showing harmonized trees and standing stones. Quarto (30 cm), bound in the traditional Japanese style in elegant green silk over boards, lilac ties, gilt titles to cover (in English) and traditional ink title label (in Japanese), silk headbands. Printed on fine doubled, french fold, Japanese mulberry paper. Newsom says in his note, “It is hoped that anyone, by means of this guide, will be able to design a scene with something of the feeling of far mountains and distant lakes.” To this end he includes detailed accounts of the elements of the Japanese garden; significance of stones and their arrangement in the traditional… Read more

Description:
Fordingbridge, Hamps.: Delphic Press, 1949- 1957 (pp. 1- 1112, adverts). Softcover, tan and olive, with black titles and decorations (two volumes with cello tape reinforced hinges, neat ms. notes). Shortly after W.W.II, Carey set himself to producing this ambitious jazz discography to be sold by subscription, but, as he says in the introduction to the first volume, ‘Whatever relief the unfortunate subscribers might feel at receiving this almost mythical volume it is as nought to that which I experience! I have been at the receiving end of the letters-- some merely hopeless, some jocular and some belligerent-- concerning the delay. This volume has had a very unhappy history and at times I shared the subscribers’ doubts as to whether it should ever appear.’ That these volumes did appear and did achieve the degree of completeness Carey hoped for is due in part to the work of McCarthy, who researched ‘coloured’ jazz, and Venables who researched ‘white’ jazz (a not… Read more

Description:

London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1957. “Selected, edited, and introduced by Gwyn Jones. Collotype reproductions of  8 water-colour paintings and 11 pencil drawings by Lavinia Blyth [Leslie Blanche].” Folio, 80 pp., 18-point Golden Cockerel type on handmade paper. One hundred numbered copies were issued in three-quarter “red and green morocco with a second set of eight pictures and eight of the drawings... 400 [numbered] copies in quarter red morocco with grey canvas boards” (Cock-A-Hoop, #206, p. 40).  Our unnumbered copy of Songs and Poems acquired in sheets, uncut and untrimmed, in eight sections-- Introduction, Parts I- VII, with one colour plate and drawing each.
Text pages 40 cm x 27 cm, plates 38.2 cm x 27 cm (as against 37.5 cm x 25.5 cm). It’s hard to say for certain, but this is likely a late proof, with no markings or notes (or maybe at the Chiswick Press the printer said, “Oops, Christopher, looks like we printed 501.”) Bound, as found, in dark green cloth over… Read more

Description:

London: John Murray, 1824. First edition (pp. xxx, 571, errata). Quarto (29.5 cm), in modern three-quarter morocco over complimentary marbled boards, gilt titles to spine, red and black morocco labels, five raised bands; illustrated by 26 plates engraved from excellent drawings by George Lyon, commander of the Hecla; 5 ‘Eskimaux’ charts, 4 naval charts, and 4 horizon views, folded, in map pocket inside back cover as called for, also various tables, journals, and lunar observations, crew lists, Admiralty orders, etc. This and our copy of Parry’s Journal of the first voyage do not, strictly, comprise a set as the second volume is slightly larger (by about 1.5 cm). More properly they might be described as ‘companion volumes’ in matching bindings.  Unobtrusive blind stamp on title page and one other place of the American Congregational Association. This is the journal of Parry’s second expedition in search of a Northwest Passage. He barely had time to organize his affairs before setting out… Read more

Description:

London: John Murray, 1821. Second edition (pp. xxix, 310, clxxix). Quarto (28 cm) in modern three-quarter dark brown morocco over complimentary marbled boards, gilt titles to spine, red and black morocco labels, five raised bands, tissue guards; twenty plates as called for, including several folding charts, views, and plans; also various tables, journals, and lunar observations, crew lists, Admiralty orders, etc.  This and our copy of Parry’s Journal of the second voyage do not, strictly, comprise a set as the second volume is slightly larger (by about 1.5 cm). More properly they might be described as ‘companion volumes’ in matching bindings. Save for a very few with minor, unobtrusive damp stains, the plates accompanying the text of the first Journal are clean, bright, and, undamaged. This is the report of the first of Parry’s several voyages of discovery into the northern seas in search of a Northwest Passage. The ODNB says, in part, “... early in 1819 Parry (still only a lieutenant)… Read more
